Chestnut trees and Plantra Tubes

Max

Yearling... With promise
I have 24 chestnut seedlings in 3 gallon pots that I grew from seeds this year and I want to plant them now because I won't be able to tend them this winter. I have thirteen 5' plantra tubes and was wondering if I cut them in half how that would work out. I always cage trees with remesh wire. Anyone know how that will work? Chestnuts are about 18" tall now and have lost their leaves. Thanks

There is not much tending required. How south is south central? I've overwintered them in Northern VA by sacking them next to the house and mulching them in good. The tubes should protect them this winter if you go that route but may not protect them next winter when they are larger. If the pots are not root pruning containers, I'd check those roots for circling. If they are root pruning containers, I'd question whether the trees have been root pruned if they are only 18" tall.

Best of luck,

Jack
