Bud swell-which are typically slow?

sandbur

5 year old buck +
Anaros and whitney are not showing any bud swell.

Whitney may be my fault as they were my first attempt this year. Probably not wrapped tight enough.

Is that typical for these varieties?

I only tried one NW Greening, but no bud swell. Probably my fault as the roots were partially exposed to air and NWg scion might have been of poor quality.

Bud swell with kerr, kindercrisp, golden hornet, and some wild crabs.

Those should come on strong based on the fact that they are early budders

I have not given up, just trying to recognize what problems were my own doing.

An old timer gave me some grafting bands and I struggled with those at first. That is probably why the whitneys have not done well, maybe even the anaros. Unless the anaros are just slow to emerge.

Much of the NWG scion had a brown streak in the middle, but had green cambrium. Not sure what that indicates.

Whitney, like most crabs, pushes leaves out early.

I've got some Court Pendu Plat that aren't doing much, but my understanding is that they are verrrrry slow to get moving in spring. I gave up on grafting bands a number of years ago.
Maybe I should have done the same. A few were done with just tape.

I can't believe it but one of my American Pippins just broke bud over last 2 days when I would have written it off for dead. NH I had my doubts about this length of time but it happened. I have a few that look dried out so I don't have hope for them but also have a Tolman, Kinnards and Red Ribston that look like they have a chance

Tolman and Kinnaird are slower to break bud here as well.

I had one of each pop already Turkey. Still waiting for the others. Hoping for both

I grafted 20 varieties and all are 3" to 12" of growth already.

That's because you got great scion wood Spur hahahahaha. Post some pics

I think you are cheating. Not all those tall ones are coming out of the scions lol. How many grafts did you do?

Are you just teasing us NH lol?

25 b118, 25 G30, 25 M7, and 14 re-graphs from what the rabbits didn't eat this winter.

100% success this year

I can tell you none of mine are anywhere near Spurs size.

Here's my furthest along. A Van Dorn and a Stevens.
Keep in mind mine stayed in 50-55 room for three weeks and then have been outside for the past two weeks with daytime temps below 65 until today. We are due for 70s the next 5 days so I think they'll start to go.
They were about this way last year and I got plenty of growth.

Is there a reason why you do not put more dirt in the root trapper bags?

In my observations today. Wolf River was the winner, all 4 of my 4th leaf trees are barely moving. Summercrisp and Flemish Beauty pears were close second. Northern spy was also very slow.

Fastest along was honeygold which was blooming. Many of my crabs as well as pristine were leading the early varieties.

Yes. These are 3 and 5 gallon bags. It gives me a handle to grab onto when I move them. I can usually move two in each hand when I move them. Otherwise, it would take me 3 to 4 times as long to move them because I would only be able to move them one at a time. They'll be planted in their final destination before their roots fill these bags or I'll move them up to larger bags if need be.
I filled my two bags up with dirt, but now I have to carry them back in to the woods. I wish I was as smart as you!

I might load them on a deer cart and pull them in.

I put a lot more Soil in mine last year but this year I put only enough to cover the roots and give w little space for the roots to expand before I plant later this month or in June. With less dirt way lighter and easier to transport. If you will plant same year no need wasting so much soil as the roots will never outgrow the bag in that short of time. I will post some pics

image.jpg Top 2pics are a few of my grafts and the last one the tree on right is a hold over liberty that I kept in my garage this last winter. It woke up nicely and is doing great
