Buckman Crabapple

TonySoprano

5 year old buck +
Blue Hill has the Buckman Crabs Hardiness for Zones 3-6 , Midwest rates it for Zone: 3 - 8

I'm in zone 7 , just wondering if anyone on here has a Buckman growing in zone 7.

I'm in Virginia , so the cold won't be a problem....maybe the summer heat is why BH doesn't rate it for zone 7 ?

It's hot , but it's not Texas , Arizona or Florida hot.

IF you're hesitant to get the tree this year, maybe topwork a branch in a little less brighter spot on a tree like the north side. This will keep that branch wet longer, so you can find out if fireblight or scab is going to be an issue. I believe buckman is a dolgo seedling, they can take bad cold and heavy heat. Dolgo's are fireblight resistant . They're the slant 6 of the crabapple world.

Lack of cold can be an issue with some apple trees. They call it chill hours. There is a chemical in the tree that slowly dissovles over time in the winter. Basically a chemical clock that winter is over and the leaves can start waking up. Even though your a zone 7, your state has plenty of chill hours like 800-1000. Few trees need more than that. Chill hours are when this chemical can release from the tree around 35 to 45 deg F.

Can;t see why you'd have a problem. Usually tree places state zone acceptance baed on customer feedback. Not sure who has had buckman longer, midwest or blue hill. Got a young one growing in zone 3/4 right now. IF I get scion, I'll make one for home and for farmland this upcoming year.

It will be interesting to see what the drop time is in your climate.

I have no idea how far south it has been planted.
