Brassicas wintering over?

Yarg

5 year old buck +
I overseeded a custom Brassica mix into standing soybean in August.
It included t-raptor, barkant, Winfred, Barisica, bayou kale and radishes.
Certain areas got too much seed and as I was walking my plot today I came across what appears to be several brassicas. I'm in the Catskill Mountains of New York between his own 4 and 5 has anyone else experienced overwintering.. Thanks

Turnips over winter in my area but radishes don't. Turnips need to be terminated before they bolt in the spring. They produce so much seed that you get too many plants per square foot and the are all stunted. I use a tiller and set it so it barely hits the soil. This is enough to terminate the turnips. Radishes get soft in the winter and rot before spring and don't go to seed. Last year I had a great turnip crop. We had a poor mast crop and the deer terminated 7 acres of turnips for me. I didn't have to terminate them this spring. In previous years when we've had a good mast crop, there are plenty left to bolt in the spring.

Thanks,

Jack

I had a field full of rotten ones. None made it. But I thought so until I looked close. Turned out to,be yellow rocket or some kind of mustard weed.

Maybe if your seed didn't germinate. But I would think in the Catskills any that germinated in the fall died.

In certain fall plots I plant clover, PTT, and rape. The rape over winters well and actually gets a healthy jump on the clover in the spring. The deer hammer it early spring. Once I see a healthy mat of clover, and notice the deer no longer eating the rape I mow it down to clover level. I have not had PTTs overwinter.

All the dwarf Essex rape seed I planted last year at my farm in Portage county WI had absolutely no chance to over winter. The deer just annihilated the plots eating the plants to the nubs. The deer got interested in the rape plants in early November and by January they had mowed down the plots. I never expected it to last into the spring.

I haven't paid to close attention but something in my mix over winters every year. The plots get sporadic use and Minnesota's winter don't even kill it.

What was in your mix---that would narrow down what it might be.

The OP posted his mix so i'll assume you are talking about mine. It is generally DER, PTT, and Radish. This season I also added apin and barkant turnip.

Yes sir
I am always interested in things that over winter in Minnesota---if you figure out what came back this spring please let us know.

My radish seems to grow for 2-3 years after I plant. These are about 5’ high right now 5B019EA7-736E-45D8-9FBC-591369DCA45F.jpeg

There are hundreds of them, I think a lot of them are kale.If you look at some of the photos you could see growing off the stem that remained.
