Best boots for western hunt

cbw

5 year old buck +
Going on my first mountain hunt in September to Idaho for bear. Researching the best boot. My only criteria is that I have a bunch of points built up on my Cabela's card, so I plan to purchase from Cabela's/Bass Pro.

Right now, I'm leaning towards a non-insulated Kenetrek boot.

Any input from those who've done western hunts?

I've always went with the danner pronghorn type boots that are in the $250 range and I've never had any issues. Lately I've been buying some bargain bin type Bass Pro Redhead boots and they are great as well but likely won't last as long as higher priced boots. In September you will be fine with uninsulated.

Regardless of whatever boot you choose, I'd definitely start wearing them around for months before the hunt, so the shoes and your feet are broken in.

I have kenetreks. They've been great to me and are totally waterproof. I'm sure there are other good options. But The Kenetrek Mountain Extreme's are solid.

I've used the Hardscrabbles as work shoes, but they got heavy on me so I moved to Oboz at work.

Last three sets of Danners I have bought have been off eBay. If you know what size you need in that brand, try looking there. All have been new boots.

You can't go wrong with Kennetrek. I have the Mtn. Extreme...extremely high quality boot. Out of the box they felt like I had owned them for a year. There was literally no break in period.

Zamberlan is another boot maker I'd recommend. I've got their Outfitter 980 GTX....made in Italy...rugged and lightweight. Not sure in Cabelas carries these.

Both would be a great choice for a western mountain hunt.

Thanks, all! Will check out the Danner and Zamberlan as well as the Kenetreck. Good suggestion on checking out eBay. But I’ve got enough Cabela’s points that I shouldn’t have to outlay any cash. Appreciate the input!

I was at the Cabelas in Omaha last fall and I took a pic of the most expensive boot on the shelf. It was a Zamberlan.

kenetrek are hard to beat, MTN Extreme or Bridger High if you want something to wear for every day use as well. I used Bridger highs on my elk hunt and they were perfect and i wear them daily in wi as well.

What kind of bear hunt? You walking alot? Make sure you break them in.

Need snake boots?

I love my pronghorns. Wouldn't wear them though, 1000 gram ones....

My favorite on foot hunts been in my keen hiking boots.

I'd bring 2 pairs of boots over 2 rifles..... I've need extra boots several times. Only time 2nd rifle was needed was guy at camp forgot ammo, so he borrowed my spare gun. Went home with a decent 8 pointer compliments of the marlin company.

I like having 2 pair. I have a pair of Schnee's that are high, and a little heavy. I take a second pair of lighter weight Danner's that are lower cut, like a hiking boot. I wear the Danner's a good portion of the time. I wear the Schnee's if I know I'm going to be in super rugged terain climbing or descending. I like having a back up along for everything as important as your boots.

I like Meindl boots. My favorite are comfort hunters but they might not be right for a western hunt. Check out the comfort extreme.

You can't go wrong with Kenetrek if they fit your feet well. I have a pair that have seen numerous seasons in the mountains out west. They are now a backup boot. I now wear Crispi boots because they fit my feet better, mainly a wider toe box. Meindl also make a quality boot but they didn't fit my feet well and I ended up returning the one pair I had.
