Almost every year, bears and coons cause some damage in my orchard. I got this idea from posts by Willy and Appleman, so I tried it out this year on one tree that seems to attract the most attention every year. This thief certainly thought about going up the tree for a snack, but the stove pipe was not so easy to climb, and he ambled off with the tree fully intact. I have a camera on this tree all year long, so we will see if the stove-pipe guard deters all potential thieves as they get more desperate.
