I found the same thing this past weekend. It seems every year a bear comes by and takes a wack at a tree tube or 2. I am guessing they are just in a bad mood at the time and the tree tube is the sorry victim. I had one this weekend where the post was still standing, but he ripped the zip ties right out of the tree tube. The tube was still usable.

We rarely get pics of bears during our hunting season, but they move through our area in the summer when young males are dispersed.

They are curious more than anything. I had them dig up a freshly planted Allegheny Chinquapin, rip tubes off a few chestnuts, and totally destroy a ground blind. But for me it is infrequent and a tolerable loss. If I had resident bears it may be different.

Had the same thing with a couple of tree tubes getting ripped down last week but more likely coons going after wasps in the tube for me. Only had a couple of bear pics by me in 12 yrs. In previous years with shorter tubes I had the deer grab the tops and pull the crap out of em too with the same result. I no longer use 4ft or bluex tubes for that reason.

My tubes seem to attract bears too. Lucky for me all they've done so far is bite a few holes in them then they leave them alone. So far I've only had to pick up and put 1 tube back up.... no fatalities yet

I have had bears tear up several tree tubes this year. I think they are going after the wasp larvae, which is why I try to spray some of my imidan and imidacloprid mixture down inside the tube when I spray the tree. Split toe, I saw quite a bit of poke berry in your picture, was any of that right by the destroyed tree and tube? I know the Bears are working the poke berries hard right now. I tried to inject the poke berry stems with 41% glyphosphate that are right next to my trees but the 16 ga needle stops up. Poke berry is a great wildlife plant when they are in the right spot, 30% protein this time of year according to Craig Harper at UT. BECAUSE OF BEARS, THE ONLY FRUIT I CAN GROW IS PERSIMMON. At least I hope I can. Does anyone know of a way to prevent bear damage to bearing pear and apple trees? I tried nasty barbed wire 6" apart spiraled around 4 6' t-posts around each tree. I tried a 3 strand electric fence around one tree last year. I haven't tried an electrified tube of 2x4" mesh welded wire around each tree, but I saw where Dr C Dahlke had used that on raccoons.

Yeah there is some poke salad around my trees, which is not helping matters. Bear love them.
