Are the glory days of deer hunting coming to a close?

Seems a good number here don't dread the European model, but rather welcome it

My point above is, if a ballot initiative showed up tomorrow that asked if hunting should be allowed, I would vote no. And I am an AVID hunter. I see where this is headed and if Kansas won’t reward me for staying in Kansas by holding back one thing for me, I sure as heck don’t intend to safeguard it for the use of folks that I don’t know. No disrespect to anyone of course. I’m not a rich man so I don’t intend to defend a rich man’s sport if it comes to it.

That’s why I would be comfortable outlawing hunting deer altogether in Kansas. I’d still be just fine.

Everyone can still hunt public land, so there are plenty of options for guys who don’t own land. Maybe the hunters who lost access to farms should push their states for more public land or public access programs for private land.

My oldest can’t get much time off to come to the farm. He hunted PA state game lands and only saw 2 other hunters. When I was a kid those game lands hard orange everywhere.

He saw deer but nothing big enough for him to shoot.

Great discussion about European game management

What they are proposing is just about the opposite of European game management. In Europe, big game animals are allocated to landowners based on how much land they own. The landowners, often farmers, then sell the rights to the game animals to the highest bidder.

I live and hunt in Europe. We don't get animals based on where we own property, we get animals based on how much property we own.

Kansas is 97% private land, so there aren’t “plenty of options”. And I don’t think many NR landowners are buying land to put it in public access programs…

what would you like to see in Kansas that would help the residents?

Cap NR tags at 10% on a draw.

Think of it like citizenship. As a US citizen I expect certain things that a non-US citizen doesn’t get. Why then as a Kansas resident is it unreasonable to expect things that a non-Kansas resident doesn’t get? Is that too unreasonable? And again, I am looking at this as it relates to the title of the thread. Hunters pushing out hunters from the sport will absolutely lead to the destruction of the sport itself in my humble opinion.

if a hunter replaces a hunter how are we losing hunters?
I don’t think a resident losing his permission farm cause someone from out of state bought it to hunt is the problem. Heck maybe that guy is motivated to lock something up for himself so it doesn’t happen again. If we want to team up to make a change then go after zoning laws that allow land to get developed. That’s what’s killing access. Not billy Bob losing his free spot cause someone stimulated the local economy and bought it

I mentioned this like 100 posts ago, but a hunter who replaces 4 other hunters by hunting 5 states means we lose 4 hunters nationally. That is a problem. When a guy from New Jersey buys that Kansas 80 to ensure he gets a tag, Kansas loses a hunter with a vote. Eventually we don’t have enough voters who care about the resource. Here where you have the insurance lobby and farming lobby trying to eradicate the deer, trust me you need Kansans with a vote who care about it to safeguard the resource.

I also don’t know about the local economy stimulation. Let’s say I am Billy Bob. About 90% of the reason I am still in Kansas is the hunting. As that continues to get worse, I am considering moving out of state and only returning to hunt. Is that a net positive to lose my 365 spending with about 14 days worth? And at the risk of sounding boisterous, I consider myself above average in intelligence, work ethic, and morals. They lose that too because nobody is moving back here to take my place full time. All because a resident here doesn’t get any perks? I dunno.

People keep referencing votes and losing them? Are yall all having these secret hunting ballots in other states? I’ve lived in 3 states as an adult and don’t think I’ve ever voted on a single wildlife issue.

Well, here we have representatives who work for the farm and insurance lobby and those who don’t. I get to vote on that.

None of the farmers deer hunt out there? Seems odd. In my neck of the woods most of them hunt, if they have a place to go.
