One of the apples we have tried and have found that will fruit thru any harsh winters is Prairie Magic developed in Alberta , I think grafted to a larger root would be close to fool proof , late ripening , late bloom to miss spring frost , late ripening so would be prime late fall , We haven't let any hang late to know a drop time but would assume late also as its a firm apple .

We have t-budded for several years and achieve about 60 percent on the first try , timing is everything , about mid august seems best here

Just for future reference, where did you get your scion wood? I have looked at the websites of many of the nurseries involved in the Canadian Prairie apple program and none of them sell in the US.

Its out there in the case of Prairie Magic somewhat tightly controlled , paperwork, legal commitments, buy in large numbers, for some reference some of the Canadian varieties are available thru common nurseries like Jungs , A guy never knows who visits their orchards in late winter , lots of stuff out there if creative apples , pear , cherries all bred for the north

I found that many of them are allowed to sell their cherry trees to the US market, but not one that I have looked at can or does sell apple trees.

Jungs had prairie magic in the catalog this spring , so they are being released just not thru conventional sources . a lot of commercial nurseries don't cater to small orders . Call jungs see if they have any left their item number 30674

Also can order from baileys nursery but you will need a big check book to get in the door

What size of apple and how would you rate the flavor?

PM was on the recommended list from the Staples, Mn. meeting last fall.

Excellent flavor and will take the early frosts of fall well , in fact may be needed to flavor up ,about the size of a honeycrisp This and others are kind of hard to source but can be found with some persistence .
