Anyone use a Stihl backpack fogger?

BC Buck

5 year old buck +
Need to kill prickly ash and way to high stems count for basal application. Stem 1/4 to 1/2" dia every 18"= 1 million per acre. Going to buy new Birchmeier backpack sprayer after returning my Stihl last fall. Dealer could not keep it from leaking when full. Kicking around idea of also buying the gas powered fogger. Looks like could cover more ground but weight might wear me out faster. Have any of you ever used one for herbicide?

An acquaintance has one and he brought it to my place to do buckthorn with. It covers ground fairly quickly but the kill success was not high. Assuming it was misting more leafs than coating them? I think the battery powered backpack sprayers are a better option, IMO

I have some italian brand; gas- best they make- its pretty awesome.

Decent success on invasives and grasses. Its easy to adjust but knowing your concentration is not as simples as one would like

Interesting, never seen this before. Will investigate.

Yes- ask me how I know. Haha. My fault 100%. They didnt charge for them/shipping either.

I have a solo one works great. Think you cant go wrong with most brands. Mine was on clearance at AM Leonard last year.

I use it for apple tree spraying. I think the kill rate wouldn't be high as said before. I'd focus on a longer hose on a ATV sprayer. Buy another 50ft or something. I've done small young trees and grasses with gly on the ATV sprayer. Birches, maples, and various shrubs might be easier task though.

What herbicide were you thinking of using?

Can you brush hog, then spray a few months later with ha boom?

I tryed the ATV method but to thick to get bike around. Seen videos of the Stihl sr450 and at max rate can empty 3 gallon tank in about 4 min. Between 200 MPH wind and that much herbicide should be able to coat top and bottom of leafs. Iv read 12 to 15 15 MPH wind helps control drift. Dont want to be coated with herbicide. Prickly ash seems to be killed ease compared to MFR and bush honeysuckel.Hard to find herbicides and rates for foggers. Read some old literature that 13% mix of 41%gly works on BH.

I have the Stihl. Warning, it's very top heavy when filled with 4 gallons. You can also empty it very quickly. It requires some skill and knowledge for proper application rates.

What do you use it on. Heard many orchards use for fungicides.

I used it 2-3 times at camp to put down pre emergent for stiltgrass.

I've used it a few times on my home peach trees to spray copper fungicide.

This thing is a beast to put on/pick up. I use the bed of the Ranger to help get it on so I don't have to bend and lift.

Im only 170lb and that is a major concern. Also tripping walking through thick woods. Have had prickly ash taking over undergrowth for over 30 years. Seeing those drone pilots talking about TSI being #1 variable to attract and holding deer has me thinking about foger being best idea. Backpack sprayer just dont get job done fast. If don't workout I will still have for leaf removal at home.

I'm running the SR430, which is a bigger unit. I'm 6'2" 230lbs. I have a 4 gallon birchmeier that I use. Anything filled with 4 gallons of water will have some weight. Add on an engine, and you're talking serious weight. The SR430 weights 27 lbs, and the SR200 weighs 17. Add in herbicide AND fuel, and you have some mass.

The first time I used it, I wondered WTH did I get myself into. Now I know smartert ways to fill it and get it on. I'm pretty comfortable with it walking on smooth ground. Walking in the woods is trickier as you need to navigate over, around and under things.
