Both. Power companies were forced to shell out millions to clean the air pollutants caused by coal generators and then after that initial capital investment came a huge influx of excess, cheap natural gas from tracking advancements. It was a substantial blow to the industry. Meanwhile, natural gas peaker plants can be constructed in a much smaller footprint, near zero emissions, and with incredibly lower amounts of labor. Oh, and the supply of LNG is CHEAP and much easier to transport than coal.Fair enough.
So what do you attribute the steep drop in coal usage for electricity production? Natural market forces or more government regulations concerning coal and subsidies for "green" electricity production?
