Any experience using Dr Craig Harpers cocktail in freezing weather.

BC Buck

5 year old buck +
For years been using Remedy, diesel. Not 100% guarantee on hickory kills and poor results on black locust. Been reading how great Harpers mix works. With generic herbicides prices though would try this winter. Have herbicides sitting here ready to go and had a O crap thought. Will this mix spray at below freezing temps being 40% water. Thinking could add small quantity of green antifreeze. Temps could range between 5 and 32 degrees.

For hack and squirt? Will things be flowing enough inside the tree to work well?

We've killed buckthorn DEAD with the garlon/diesel 1:3 mix down to 0 degrees on cut - stump treat. Never tried the Harper cocktail though. I'm sure he has some literature on the efficacy of his cocktail, unfortunately all of his stuff I have saved is on my desktop at work or I'd gloss it over.

You may try a search here for his TSI documents, amd its likely there is something in there about ambient temp applications.

Think I'd stick with something diesel based. I've used the green picloram based gallon stuff in the winter at home on vines. Worked well.

I've girdled large trees with a 5/8th paddle bit with 3:1 diesel n triclopyr with good results. Did a few maples the year before with the green stuff. Didn't kill the tree, set it back a good bit though.

Remedy /diesel schmokes all of my bad actors

I have honey locust, elm, sweetgum that are killed easily with a 25%/75% mix

It will work in freezing temps. However, I now apply with a paintbrush and use a plastic nut container to hold herbicide. I also use a plastic face cover to keep herbicide out of eyes. Harper cocktail clogs all my spray bottles.

Ive done this with herbicide issues

I was looking for email. Where did you locate?

I will paint it on next time too. The diesel ruined a rubber o-ring in my sprayer.

Email and will post response. Thanks. He must get a million emails a week and querious if has time to respond.
WOW, 20 min to respond. I am shocked!

Hello Rick,

We have not had a problem when temperatures are in the mid- to upper 20s. Of course, the squirt bottles are continuously moving as you go from tree to tree. That said, I don’t recall doing FSI work when the temperature is below that, assuming there would be problems with freezing. I imagine you could replace water with a light oil, but I have not tried that, so I cannot say for sure. Sorry I can’t be more specific. If you try something else, let me know how it goes. I would be interested to hear. Thanks—

which is why i buy my 4 gal backpack sprayers at harbor freight

They will last longer if you rinse them well after each use

I have been through countless styles of bottles and pump sprayers. I manly buy the heavy duty HD gray sprayers. Buy 6 at a time. When steppin and fetching solo the paint brush is doomed for mess and spilling. If one person of teams job is paintbrush would be OK. But setting down on ground while running chainsaw will spill. Number one best way of applying herbicide is using a squeeze bottle with long spout like at old fashion fast food joints. Reason I don't like is uses twice as much herbicide but probably good thing.

I’ll use squirt bottles like dawn dish soap comes in.

I always rinse my sprayers for storage. I didn't rinse the diesel out because I was going to spray more throughout the next few days. The rubber swelled up and broke the seal in less than 24 hours.

I will use the paintbrush on buckthorn and honeysuckle. For drill and squirt or cut stump I use a squirt bottle, either the ones from the restaurant supply or the ones Tordon comes in.

Do you find tordon to thick for anything but cut stump? Thought about adding diesel because works best for black locas.
