Gentlemen -

Does rye grain get harvested for the grain around where you're located (as in rye bread flour), and not just as food plot item / soil builder? I haven't seen any posts regarding rye as a commercial crop on here. Is there much of a market for it?

Not that I see in the south

Never seen Rye grown or harvested by farmers around here, wheat is king for grain around here.

Wheat is a better crop.

There is a market for Rye in NY. Lots of demand for seed from organic folks, also NY has a tax rap for distilleries.

MY favorite bread is rye, or sourdough with a bit of mashed potato in the batter. Its an eastern European cheat to make lesser grains taste better in bread.

Organic farming also has a good demand for rye straw too.

Farmer I know does about 90% wheat and 10% rye. Uses it in rotation with corn and beans, that take a year off. Usually towards the end of a no till rotation back into tillage for corn.

Daughter’s boyfriend and his grandpa combined mine last summer. They have beef cattle and they mixed it in with feed.

The field was so thick they plugged the combine.

They baled the straw too.
