Having worked in manufacturing management for 20 years supervising hundreds of folks, followed by 10 years owning my own business that's employed 50 people I'm growing sick of hearing about the player's "constitutional" rights.
Do the players have "constitutional" rights and did I serve in the USMC to defend such freedoms? ABSOLUTELY... BUT...
They're on the WORK CLOCK when playing ball and the NFL and Goodell ABSOLUTELY could have nipped the problem in the bud by enforcing the guidelines in the NFL Game Operations Manual that clearly stipulate teams can be penalized for failing to stand for the anthem. Policy in the Operations Manual reads, “The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem. During the playing of the National Anthem, players on the field should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. Players in the bench areas should do the same, and should line themselves up evenly along the sidelines. The home team should insure that the American Flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”
NFL had no problem stopping RJ3 from wearing a Christian t-shirt reading "Know Jesus, Know Peace", Dallas wasn't allowed to honor fallen police with the most discreet of symbols, and the list goes on and on regarding prior policies followed to the Nth degree.
But Goodell failed to enforce policy on the National Anthem??? No excuses and I've got a couple of reasons for feeling that way. First, with players on the job they CAN CLEARLY be disciplined for failure to follow policy. Second, HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD BE ALLOWED TO PROTEST ACTIVELY ON THE CLOCK AT WORK with no fear of repercussions AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WITH NO CLEARLY STATED / MEASURABLE goal set to end such protesting.
Who's measuring "injustice"? I bet if you interviewed all the players separately, they'd give tons of different answers of what it will take to end their protests... fair trials (despite their prior protesting on false narratives such as "Hands-Up. Don't shoot!". Some would say only when Trump steps down. Others would say they're not even sure, but they'll know when the time is right. Goodell letting such ill-defined protests happen in the first place was management failure of the most epic variety.
Like Bill, I'll say this... if you'd ever worked with me you'd have found me to be FAR less prejudice than numerous other managers with whom I worked... always sought to hire the MOST QUALIFIED candidate who interviewed well, and in the process hired many minorities, gays, and individuals with religious AND political beliefs ranging all over the gammut. Always felt what they did OFF the job was TOTALLY their business (as long as it didn't result in criminal conviction / missed time)... but ON THE CLOCK I expected them to respect and follow policies.
Off my soapbox now. Will do my best to put it up and not get back on it.
