4' Welded Wire Fence Deal

Same on the small diameter just for later rub protection.

10 ft of fence with the bigger openings like 6" is probably fine for spruce or other moderately browsed trees. For oaks or apples you need to make it a bigger dia and use like 12-13 ft. Small deer and fawns can poke their heads thru those 6" opening and browse the leader when just several feet tall and inadequate diameter. Been taught that lesson a few times. Sometimes the same tree! If you plant a 6 ft tree likely ok.

Or if you want to save on wire and cut at 10 ft really need to stick with 2 x 4 mesh. Everything is a trade off

I typically use 10' lengths. Lengths of fence will equal the following diameter:
10' = 2.9'
12' = 3.5'

Remesh at 5' high probably overkill for conifers, but good for apple trees. 48" high welded wire with 4"x2" openings would be cheaper for the conifers. As the tree grows and bushes out, you can always unclip the ends and let the cage expand with the tree growth.

Took some cages off a few norways this summer that I thought had outgrown them. They were in the 6-8' tall range and not in a normal deer "area" as they were used for road screening. Well lo and behold a buck found them and rubbed 3 of them which I'm sure will set the tree back a few years. Without making a 25' fence, how do you guys keep the deer off of bigger trees and still allow the branches/limbs to do their thing?

Let them grow taller, and up-clip the cage ends to allow the conifer to bush out. I have cages still on 10'-12' trees. Hopefully the lateral branches will make it more difficult for them to get into the tree.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind, was just hoping to repurpose the cage to other things. I refuse to buy more caging at the current prices.

I appreciate discussions like this. It helps my lazy tendencies win the argument with my cheap tendencies. reusing a $5 cage isn't worth risking a tree I've spent years on...

Bought a 100 foot roll of 4 foot welded wire for around $80 ….

Runnings in MN.

Getting closer to “go” time !

Were they running a sale or something? Do you have a link? I would go and clean the local runnings out tomorrow for that price.

I’ve got fifty ish trees to cage this spring.
I’m going this route with electric fence posts and aluminum screen on trunks.

These driveway markers regularly go on sale for 50 cents each after rebate, or free after rebate (limit 20 when free). I've had good luck using them to hold cages. Occasionally a deer will get a cage off, but its only happened a few times. I've got over 100 of them sitting a shelf.

This week we've got 155 seedlings coming. 30 go in tubes (pecan, oak, walnut), 75 get no protection cedars), 50 get cages (roughleaf dogwood and smooth sumac).

Thanks for the heads up. I need about 600' of this to direct deer on a field edge where they pop out anywhere. I can pinch them down in front of the blind now... Giddy up.

I like the 330’ will work for about 40+ trees!
This should be my last big planting…..but I’ve said that before.

I think we’ve all said that before..and it just doesn’t work!

I have no idea. I was looking at the list of what's available and adding stuff to my cart.

I'm off work this week for projects at the land and driving down this morning I saw a pile with a "FREE" sign by the road. Got a few cages made of remesh and 8 old T posts.

I went and cleaned the local Runnings out today. They only had 5 rolls but I took all 5. $89.99+ the exorbitant sales MN tax. Out the door for $485.38. Thanks for the tip. Tractor supply is $109+ tax. Fleet farm is $100+tax. Happy to get what I got. The shit ain't getting any cheaper. I should have enough for 2026 now. Already had enough for 2025.

Pecans are new to me, put my first three in a couple years ago. Everything I’ve read about them I like, for me the northern thin shelled varieties are a must.
Mine have put on a couple feet a year so far.
I think they will check a box on the habitat list for sure, I could see guys getting into pecan trees like they have chestnuts and pecans are later droppers here holding some into late fall early winter. I’ve got a buddy that has two old huge ones in his yard. Everything seems to eat them.
I ordered a dozen for this spring.
