4 foot pup Cultipacker question

I see quite a few of those 4 foot Brillion "pup" cultipackers around in really good shape. What did the real farmers use those for back in the day? Or, the better question is how did they use them? Why did they use them? 4 feet is not very wide even for a small foodplot guy or gal.

The ones I have seen in use are attached behind and each side of a 10 ft cultipacker or so. Sorta V shaped and could maybe cover 15-16 ft. Maybe to help work with unlevel contours? Sorta like batwing mower effect too which gives wide swath in use but easier to transport when broken up into pieces. My .02 cents but ask a real farmer....

Found a pic for ya

Our cultipacker(s) looked like that when we bought 'em. It was a 6-footer in the middle, flanked by two 4-footers. They were separated and now reside at three different properties, so we can cultipack w/o having to drag them around from place to place.

neat i've not seen that one. We have a 10 ft double Brillion - I could see rigging those pups up to run one in front of the other - would be pretty cool and a good ATV tool -

This ones pretty sweet, I found it on CL out in Ohio that was sitting in a farmers barn for 15 years

So what did you steal that one for. That is an original one and very few of those around.

There are still a bunch around in WI but they used to make them here. Now I think the Brillion name is owned by a company in Kansas. The pic I posted above was from an auction last year, the problem is they don't go cheap. Brillion grass seeders are also common to see around.
