30 06 Crabapple

TonySoprano

5 year old buck +
I had a little over 400 pics on this crappy Stealth cam ( Never buy the cheap package deal 2 cams for around $100 ). My more expensive $100 -$120 for one steath cam have much better picture quality . Anyway I think this Whitetail Crabs .30 06 is around 4 years old , with still a bunch drying up and still hanging. I've seen some folks on here say the 30 06 crabs never drop from their trees. Probably at least 150 of the pics had deer circling around the tree and appeard to be eating them off the ground. So some must be dropping or they wouldn't keep coming back . Looks like After Hunting season I need to start trapping some coons before they destroy my trees. STC_0427.JPG

Raccoons can be tough on trees.

I have a few apple trees that hold their fruit really late, but something always knocks it off the tree. We have quite a few turkeys in our area, and they will fly up in the trees to pick off the fruit that is stuck on the tree. They are heavy enough that they can break branches too, but the few broken branches don't seem to cause any long term issues.

I -think- this tree was planted in 2021 , and this was its first decent sized crop. This is the first I've seen a coon in any of my trees. I will have to inspect them for damage next time I'm back there.

Raccoons have been hell on my trees this year. Each trip to camp was a nervous waiting game to see which tree they had chosen to be their victims. Cages destroyed, limbs broken. I started trapping this year, only 5 so far. Tough to get many when you're only there 1-2 nights before heading home again.

Don't have a ton of different variaties at camp or on the farmland, but 30-06 has been a great grower. ON b118 in clay soil and anty in sandy soil. seen -38 deg F last year and -17 deg F this past winter.

Got kerr, cranberry, chestnut, droptine, crosbbow, dolgo, and signalfire for other crabapples. 30-06 seems to be a good bit behind all of them far as leafing out this year.

Got 5 anty's to graft and pot left. After seeing them in camp I 'm going to graft one or two 30-06 again.
