2015 Colorado Muley tag, help

scott44

5 year old buck +
I put in for a Colorado Muley tag for this year to hunt with my son, really looking forward to this because he moved out there 3 years ago and I haven't been able to hunt with him since. He has done quite well on do it yourself hunts on public land the last couple years and that's what we are going to do this year. I have to get some things and I wanted some of your opinions on them. What kind of pack do you use? I have looked and you can spend $50-600 on them but I want a decent one but don't want to break the bank, thanks. TIme for this old guy to get in shape to keep up with the 25 year old kid lol.

Most deer are shot with a 12 pack on the floor and no fear of off wheeling the plains.

Alpine hunt? Day trips? 2 weeks in the bush? If you are just day tripping your bow hunting pack is more than enough

Alpine hunt 7-10 days, I have a pack for day trips but need something more.

Go to this website, go to the Mule Deer Forum and post your question. Tell them your situation, hunting with your son, what type of hunt and you will get very good advice. Many of these guys hunt every year and are top notch.

Good luck and have fun!

I've used a Blacks Creek "Canadian model" pack on all my elk hunts and I would consider it the perfect mountain pack for elk, muley or whatever. It's compact but has expanding chambers for gear or game and a muley would easily fit in the pack. This model is older but I would definitely buy another from this company if mine wears out. Eberlestock makes good packs as well.

My vote would go for a Badlands Ox. Great all around pack for this purpose! I have lived/hunted my entire life out here in the west. Go on a week long high country/back pack hunt every year (will be going to western Wyo this year)- this pack has been a sold performer for me. You can save weight with a more expense brand/model if interested- Sitka, Mystery Ranch, etc. but not a requirement. Good luck and enjoy the time with your son!

Back in 1992 my dad and I both got Cabelas Alaskan 2 I think it was called. It is funny to think back then we didn't shop for packs on the internet. The only option we knew of was the Cabelas catalog. I still have it and have used it for every elk trip that I haven't taken.

I would not recommend it. It is heavy and there are a lot better options out there. I only go every 4-6 years so I have never upgraded. But if I had to buy one, it wouldn't be this one.

Back pack?

No, no, what your looking for is called a saddle pannier. You walk, the horse carries. When you get where your going you ride.

Makes for a much nicer 7 days and horse rental is about the same cost as a car rental.
