    Protecting a line of shrubs.

I planted some rows of plums. For protection from the deer I used a few rolls on concrete reinforcing mesh that I had. Made one long skinny enclosure maybe 12’ wide with the thinking that the multiple rows of fence would screw with their depth perception and they would avoid it. That was 4 years...

    Tukey with Bow

Turkeys are incredibly tough animals and it takes a surprising amount to bring them down. To add to that, the aiming point is often hard to judge correctly. I’m no turkey expert but I have been lucky enough to take 5 or 6 with a bow and a number of different broadhead types. I’m still in the...

    Chasing Pheasants.....

Love it! In my eyes, you’re not going to find a sharper looking pup than a black ticked GSP.

    Chainsaw Milling

RC, awesome find in that spalted log! Years ago I tried the cheap jig on a 2x6. It worked but not well. A wind storm recently brought down a big oak so last week I ordered a bigger chainsaw and ripping chain. My buddy lent me his Gansberg jig and rails. Can’t wait to try the new setup.

    2019 Grafting Results

Bur and barndog, my golden russet graft didn’t make it either. Strange that all of ours failed.

How many hours is too many

Ha! I even got that wrong with my first tractor purchase. It’s a John Deere but it’s yellow (industrial version).

How many hours is too many

I know the answer is “it depends” based on maintenance and how hard it was used. But, I’m kicking around the idea of upgrading tractors and I see used ones that are all over the map. 500 hours to 5000 hours. I’m sick of tinkering with my current model and want something that can be more hands...

    Rootstock top experimentation time!

Well, my experiment it not going so well. After grafting, the excess rootstock and scion was dipped in rooting hormone and shoved in potting soil until only 2 buds were showing. They greened up fantastically at first but the stored energy ran out and now we have this. I’ve got one and a half...

You'll shoot your eye out kid.....

Taking out one peeper doesn’t slow those old boys down much. I’ve had a couple resident bucks with only one eye over the years and they were just as hard to get into range as mature deer with two eyes. I wish that wasn’t true, I need every advantage I can get!

    Pruning grafts

All of them are on b118 from Copenhaven Farms. They were 1/4”. Roots looked great on almost all of them. Upon closer look the other night, about 3 of rootstocks failed out of the 60 that are in the bed.

    Pruning grafts

H20, thank you too for the scions! They are looking really good. The damage is done, I went out last night and cleaned up the rootstock growth. It was pretty dark at the time so some additional detailing still needs to happen. Fingers crossed that this will push more growth into the scion.

    Pruning grafts

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll start trimming back my babies. Sandbur, I’ve got a great selection of apples so far. Thank you for all the scions. You can see right up from I do have one of your ABC crabs that is looking pretty tough . I have a second one somewhere out there that I have to check...
