    Allgood Acres

Glad to see another KY member here. Looks like a great property and I love you’ve got your kids out there helping. I have 3 boys and a little girl and they’re growing up fast. I keep telling them they’re going to be the ones enjoying all the fruit and nuts and great hunting that I’m helping...

    First fruits

It’s taken a few year, but I finally have a few trees with good chestnut burs on them. The seedlings I planted about 5 years ago are mostly doing really well. Some are over 10 feet tall, others are still struggling along. The ones in full sun are at the obvious advantage. Here’s a pic of the...

    First catkins!

The one pictured was a potted plant I got on clearance at southern states 4 years ago. It’s probably 6 or 7 years old. I have a number of seedlings I started about the same time and some are taller and fuller than the potted plant.

    First catkins!

Made it to the farm today and was pleasantly surprised to find many of my Chinese chestnuts had catkins! Might get a few chestnuts this year. Apples and pears are loaded. My carmine jewel cherries have already been stripped by the birds. After staring at little growth for a few years, I love...

    What are you planting 2019?

A little behind on reporting but I got ten more pear trees of different varieties, a few crab apples (Dolgo and sugar time) a Arkansas black apple, 16 elderberries (adams, Johns, nova and York) a few european hazelnuts to add to my american patch, and 7 different persimmons. I’m running out of...

    Trapped my first coyote

I know. I hated pulling the line but it’s about an hour drive to my farm and I only had this week to run it before heading back to work.

    Trapped my first coyote

I set a few footholds for coyote and bobcats at scored on this big male. Only had three days to let the line sit before pulling. It’s a muddy mess and very warm here in ky. Gonna try again later when it gets cold. Basic dirthole set with and mb550. Trapping is new to me, but super fun.

    Dunstan/Chinese Chestnut cross pollination question.

I either read somewhere or heard someone tell me that dunstan chestnuts and Chinese chestnuts don’t cross pollinate and if mixed the nut yield would suffer. Is this true? Or can I mix dunstans with Chinese cn? Thanks for the advice.

    Pruning chinese chestnuts question

I’ve finally got great growth on around 100 Chinese chestnuts I planted around 3 years ago. As is typical, many of them are branching out quite low on the main leader. I’d like to train them to grow higher than wider. Should I prune these lower branches off and if so, Would you wait until...

Who's working in the woods this weekend?

Spent half a day discing and dragging the plot. I planted some buckwheat after clearing a few tons of rocks—some so big I had to push out of the way with the loader. The plot looks much better. I dragged the bw in and called it a day. (After I checked my trees which for the most part are...

Who's working in the woods this weekend?

Finally made it out for a good day’s work. I had let the fields grow for a couple years but decided to bush hog them and work the ground for some buckwheat forthcoming. This is the flattest place on the farm believe it or not. Super clay and super rocky. Buckwheat does well. . Pruned my...

    Tree fertilizing question

I have a planted a few hundred Chinese chestnut, alleghany chinquapin, sawtooth oak, paw paw, persimmon, hazelnut, mixture of oaks, as well as about 30 pear, apple and cherry trees in the past few years. My soil is pretty much clay after the first few inches so while the trees are doing really...
