    Your go to apple

I did not select the varieties of apples planted in the 20+yr old orchard I now own. Clearly the fujis in my orchard are a favorite of deer. Fujis will hang on the trees here in So MD thru Dec. I do stick to a rigorous spraying schedule to control scab, the summer rots, fireblight, etc... This...

    Multi flora rose options

(Ditto to an above post) My farm (So MD) was steadily being overtaken by multiflora when rose rosette disease showed up several years ago. Multiflora is very sparse around here now - new plants spring up but they don't live long. I don't know where you are, but the virus is spreading across the...

    What are these weeds?

I have tons of pokeweed on my farm - birds(-?) spread the seed it everywhere and deer never touch it. I have to regularly mow the pokeweed in my alfalfa and red clover plots. Deer hammer it on another nearby farm, so pokeweed is never an issue. Go figure... -fsh

    Anybody know what these are?

Nova - it's not too early for chicken of the woods here in So MD (pic from last week). As a result: I didn't think #1 was a chicken. -fsh

    Habitat mistakes

I've been plotting well over 20 years, and planting plots on the local Navy Base for over 10 years. The best thing I ever did was to plant trees from the start (on my farm and the Base) - my sawtooths, chestnuts, crabs, etc are a mature & productive part of the landscape. (As has been said, "the...

    Shiitake fail?

John I do force my logs by soaking them in barrels/trash containers. The spawn in the pic is MP910 (the mushroom people), a wide temperature range variety. -fsh

    Shiitake fail?

John I'm new to the forum, and I found this 'shroom thread. I started inoculating logs in 2012, with the vow that I would never buy another shroom! I've since dropped oysters, lion's mane and a few others to focus on shiitakes. (I still hunt morels, chicken of the woods, puff balls...

    Who are you?

I'm Andy Pedersen. I too am one of the many QDMA emigrés. I started food plotting in '92 when a friend told me it was ok to plant plots for deer on his farm, but I had to do all the work myself. When I first sat on a tractor back then, I knew God did not mean for me to be an engineer. In a lucky...
