Northern Whitetail Crabs growth update

White Oak

5 year old buck +
April 8 th 2020 in Virginia zone 7 I planted two 30-06 , two Droptine and one Crossbow from Northern Whitetail crabs. I took these pictures today 9/2/20 . I have One 30 06 and one Droptine that are both 9 foot tall , all the other trees are in the 8 ft to 8 1/2 foot range. So far I am very happy with the growth of these trees and will buy more from NWC in the future. In the winter I plan to thin out the brush and some of the trees behind my crabs.

His trees were huge last year. I was very pleased with the size, growth and especially the roots from Terry's trees. He is very responsive to my text messages. I missed out on droptine, I was late last year. My crossbow, 30-06, ghost, and wickson are all doing very well from him.

I'd say my NWC trees were close to the size of a potted tree you can get at Tractor Supply...They were branched out and cut down for shipping . I'd guess at least 5 to 5 1/2 feet not counting the roots. Now they are 8 ft , 8 1/2 ft , and 9 ft with a few more weeks to grow !. Terry said he's watching a few more trees and will be introducing some in the future, possibly 2022.

Charles, have you tried contacting Terry at NWC recently ? . I've sent 3 e mails the last month or so and haven't got a reply. Usually he replies back within a few days, but it's been a couple of weeks.

Yes, I texted him last week. He responded in about an hour. I never emailed him. Maybe try a text?

I thought he usually takes orders beginning in Dec. Are you guys getting orders placed? I planted 8 of his crabs last year, and they, too, grew really well. Especially this year.

I haven't officially placed an order yet. He did ask me what variety and how many I was going to order. I will probably wait until he updates the website in December. I'm going to do Redfield, Droptine, 30-06, crossbow, and grey ghost. The crossbow tree I got last year is the most impressive I've seen from any nursery.

You're probably right...I thought maybe he took orders the same time as Blue Hill....I will wait till Dec and watch his website . Thanks

Sounds good, this spring I planted 2 30-06's , 2 Droptines and 1 Crossbow...so far I've been most impressed with the growth of the DropTine and 30-06 , but all 5 of my NWC trees are doing great.

Disappointed to find my 30-06 are complete mush as of this past weekend. I'm sure they'll still get used, but Droptines still firm.

Thanks for the info. Can anyone else thar has established 30 06 trees comment if their 30 06 apples get mushy , and if so have you seen it make a difference to the deer ot not.

Could somebody post a link to Terry's trees? I'm interested in getting some crabapples. Bought some from the local conservation district and had 100% failure.

Thanks for the update White Oak, your trees look great.

These guys have a very good reputation and I like to add a few of their trees at my camp. I like to pick up trees if possible, so can someone tell me where in N. PA they're located? Also, I am curious what rootstock they use. I don't see location or rootstock mentioned on their website. Any info appreciated.

It has been speculated that their crabs are on M111.

Terry doesn’t share the rootstock. All I know is that it’s bigger than most.

The 30-06 looks like what I've been looking for. My dad bought crab apples to plant at our camp in Northern PA 10-20 years ago. He thought he got them from the Game Commission and all he remembers is that it was an Asiatic crabapple of some sort. The apples are really small almost cherry like. I'd love to figure out what they are because the turkeys absolutely love them. They fly right up in them and eat the apples off the branches.

I just emailed them for their location. I'm in central PA and it would be better for me just to pick them up.

I still can't figure out what the big secret is with the rootstock. I have some grafts from scions of these trees but refuse to buy anything where the seller won't tell me what I am getting.
