Made it to the farm today

I would love to see a winter picture of that MG road screen.

I’ll take a picture this week. By now I’m sure most of the grass blades have fallen and it’s just the stalks left.

Very nice addition. Congrats!!

here is a pic as of December 14th. Still holding quite a few blade. The heavy snow bowed some of it but it will pop back when it thaws.

Also a few deer in the new place. But I knew that.

Congrats on the addition Bill! Always good to have more elbow room.

Happy times. Wow! What a great year you are having. Congratulations on your hunting success and your land purchase and congratulations especially on being ambitious enough to plant 5,000 rhizomes. That is a serious undertaking.

Your MG makes a better screen than ours. Do you fertilize in the spring? I can see daylight through the stalks down low on my 2 row screen planted in 2015.

no but it is in full sun. Do you mow it down? I haven’t and the new growth comes right up between the old canes.

You put them pics of snow away!

We are supposed to get our first measurable snow this week....I have to be honest....not a fan! As far as I am concerned....it can snow on Christmas...and be done. You one pic shows the only thing I like about snow...it really shows what the deer are doing.

I hear that!

Kinda glad for the snow on this trip. It’s the first time my wife has come in years and she thinks it makes the place pretty...

This picture will drive you nuts because your picky azz deer won’t eat them.

I think I've mowed it twice since 2015 but am done with that. Last spring the stalks were so tough my pull behind couldn't get through them so hooked up the brush cutter to my tractor. That resulted in the stalks flying all over like punji sticks. Mowing is one less thing to do and the previous year's stalks should help fill out the screen for the win.

those were planted in 2014. Miscanthus takes three years to really get going and that is with some weed control. After that it just keeps growing outward. That was originally two rows about three foot apart. They have become one thick row now.

planted on about 18-24 inch centers with each row staggered.
Is this the exact way you will continue doing it?

It is, other than I May space the rows out a tad further so I can get my small pull behind brush hog in between them for the first year or two. Should help with weed competition

Do we have an "unlike" button?!?

It snowed here overnight. Just enough to make things slick this morning...it's already starting to melt away...ground temps are not cold enough for it to stick around too long yet. I have not been out to see what fresh deer tracks I can find yet. That is the one thing I look forward to with fresh snow is looking for tracks and beds in it.

Congrats on the new land Bill, I am genuinely happy for you bud.

Not at the farm. Not at my home.

But I have a place that is being eaten by squirrels of all things.

No firearm’s allowed. Crap if they saw me with a bow they’d cry.

I’m not sure it will work, and I won’t leave it on when I’m not monitoring it.

for the peta folks only 1 will be hurt....

unless they die. Then. It’s on........

Ha ha. Deleted the vid. My squirrel zapper zapped the snot out of squirrels but it didn’t dispose of them.

I pre-made cages for this years apples. I never plan ahead like this. But it’s going to be a busy spring.

hadn’t been to this part of the farm in years. What a hard edge transition that developed here. To the right was an overgrown field when I bought saplings were 4 to 6 foot. I left it go and it’s a jungle now. There is a perfect tree for a stand.

We’re killing one in this transition zone sometime.

Where the thick stuff turns to another fallow field I found a nice buck bed.

Looking up the edge of the ticket from the bed. Not sneakin up on him here.

Looking out the front window of the bed. He had you way before you ever saw him slip into the thicket.
