Buckwheat time table

Looking at my calender I have my buckwheat going in, in June. That seems late and I just wanted to see if I need to get that in the ground sooner. Seems like that will miss a lot of rain opportunity.

Soil temperature doesn't care what month it is. There is a reason most farmers till their soil in the fall. That dark soil absorbs all the suns energy in the spring drying and warming it up. If you are planning on using tillage and we get a early/warm spring you may be able to plant it much sooner than June.

We always need to ask ourselves what are our objectives. If that is to plant a brassica plot in early August 60 days on the buckwheat will be more than adequate. That puts you at June 1 planting date. If your worried about moisture plant it earlier. It just isn't going to put on much growth until the soil warms up. You do need some moisture for germination though so just use your best judgement.

Thank you. That's the part I was forgetting, soil temp. I'll be adding that to my notes for the future.

I’m in WI and hoping to build up the O.M. this year as it’s pretty sandy. Is it too aggressive to try and plant 2 crops in the same year? I was thinking planting early/mid-May & early/mid-July depending on weather. Then plant clover with a rye / wheat nurse crop early / mid Sept?

I'm pretty new to this so I'll leave the answer to the guys that know. But I believe you could over seed. It grows thick so it might shade out shorter plants. My rye failed due to no rain and they ate what little came up right away. But I'm in the same spot with all sand for my soil and trying to build OM too.

June first or after is when we plant our Buckwheat. They say after memorial day or last chance of frost. You can get a double crop planting then and be ready for a fall planting around labor day. If putting in brassica or clover with a cover crop we usually only do one crop of the buckwheat and get our brassica started around the end of July. For clover we kill the buckwheat, wait 2-3 weeks and the spray roundup to kill any germinating weeds before planting our clover and cover crop in mid to late August.
Doesn't take much to get Buckwheat started and growing.
