buckwheat / rye timing

IS there a decent timing between letting rye grow to seed and having a summer crop of buckwheat.

Besides the rye, what would be an ideal time to plant that? I planted it at camp once, didnot do so well, the soil is uite poor at that plot. However, this one is for home. Good soil, just dense and compacted. Likely will lightly till before planting.

How deep can buckwheat handle during planting. Might loosen soil, cultipack, then spread and cultipack.

I’ve always broadcasted buckwheat, but it is a pretty big seed. I’d think it could push through some soil no problem.

Defintely want to do something. I divide my foodploot at home in 3 strips. One strip was clover with rye seeded in late august. Has some red aramath I've been fighting a few years. Looks alot better than it used to. The other strip is a new addition to the plot. Want to ig out the drainage channel / valley a bit better and has some grass in there too. Used to be lawn.

Area was an old apple orchard with gradual lumps / furrows spaced 20ft apart. I modify the furrows to drain excess water where I can.

I think buckwheat likes warm soil. June 1st here in Kansas has worked well. This year I was a bit early and broadcast into rye on May 20th and checked today to find out d 1-2” tall buckwheat barely peeking through the thatch. I will let this grow, but if I get a flush of weeds I have no problem hitting it with 2,4-D to stop that. That rye thatch looks great and should protect the soil well.

Would buckwheat be a good early season plot? Northern Indiana. Talking September/October.

Buckwheat is a great draw by me. While I mainly have grown it over the summer, I have used it as a "treat" in the fall within bow range of my stand. Frost kills it quick and it's too expensive for a large fall planting IMO.

Agree. It won’t tolerate any frost at all from what I’ve seen. It is expensive, but for me the shipping has been problematic. I just recently found it at a local seed supplier to save on that.

Stuff like rye grows to maturity and then dies. Not much experience with buckwheat, but id look into it to see what it does. I planted once in a mix and terminated it with roundup for a fall planting.

Any good deals on 50lb? Thinking of doing a bit at camp. This will be 5 years doing a good sized food plot up there. Fighting some sedge issues too.

Big. Check albert lea seed company. See if they have a dealer nearby.

I feel like a habitat idiot. Thought I planted oats n rye. I looked at it better, I planted wheat and rye. Bought a new set of ATV discs and made a seedbed good enough for wheat.

Wondering if I should let it go, or do buckwheat in there. The middle strip I did not use the discs last summer. That I can do something with. The wheat didn't do well in there. If I recall rain wasn't too abundant after seeding. Clover and plantai are doing well there, despite being the lower spot where the water is channeled to drain out of. Been about 5 days of standing water there, and probably another day or two after this weekends monsoon.
