Video setting on cam - anyone use it?

So - I am pretty sure my cam has a setting where it will record a video clip. Does anyone here use this function on theirs? Other than battery/storage consumption any reason why this would be a bad idea?

maybe the software I use, but I find it harder to flip through videos than the pictures. I need to click on each video to watch it versus, just clicking the arrow on the picture viewer.

if it is a red flash camera, the camera glows red longer and have seen videos of deer running away from those.

It definitely takes longer to go through the files BUT it can be so much cooler than still photos. I've learned alot more about how and why the bucks use my property with video compared to still images. I REALLY like to use it on one of my cheap cams that has a noticeable click when triggered. On video mode you only get one click and the deer is usually far enough away that they don't detect it. Now imagine click, click, click, click when set to still image mode. That WILL spook the heck out of a deer.

Also I don't like the motion blur that comes along with nightime photos with the IR (red and black). Video is crystal clear.

Come later October and November the videos are priceless. Are the bucks seeking, chasing, still in feeding mode, etc... Video can answer alot of that for you.

I started doing this earlier this summer with a couple of my cameras, I started out with fresh batteries so I can't tell you how fast the videos drain them but what I found and others on here said you need larger SD cards, all my other cards were 2 or 4 GB and I bought a couple 8's. My careras have settings up to 30sec videos.

I have been using the video option on cams since 2009. The first cam with video that I owned was the 2009 Bushnell Trophy cam and I used the cam exclusively in video mode. I really like the vids and the action you could see, but then I really got spoiled when audio recording became available on other cams. I still used my 2009 BTC but it didn't have audio and then the vids seemed blah without audio. I am now using a few Reconyx XR6's in video mode and the battery life has been really good. I am currently running one of my XR6's to take one pic first and then a ten second video, which kicks in about one second after the pic is taken. This cam has Energizer Liths in it and I'm keeping track of how many pics/vids I can get from that cam before the Liths die. Currently, that cam has taken around 900 pics and 900 ten second vids(90-95% are at night)and the batt meter is still showing 100%. My other XR6's are in straight vid mode and have Tenergys in them. I haven't changed the batts in them in about two months and they still show above 75%, but I haven't kept track of the vid count on those cams. I have also used Covert Black 60's and Bushnells HD Max cams in video mode. The battery life on the Coverts was not that good when the flash setting was set on the 40' range, I was averaging about 200 ten second vids with alkalines and then the night vids would be shortened to about 2-4 seconds. The Bushnells had good battery life but the flash range wasn't that good.

I've pondered switching one to video later on in July. Still on the fence about it for all the reasons mentioned above.

I have some set for vid. Kinda fun to see what happens on a 15 second video.

Pics set even on a 3 shot burst miss a lot of things happening shortly after.

Something as simple as getting pics of a doe going by a camera, but the vid mode you may catch the buck thats trailing her.

I use video mode in low traffic areas or area that I'm trying to catch a buck like on scrapes, rubs etc... But on food plots I stick with pic mode somtime double pic mode. I highly recommend you try it though either way. You may like it better

Exactly!

^^Yep. I have one XR6 set on 10sec vid and no delay and it doesn't miss a beat.

I love watch fawns running around. I run video on the plot and pics on the trails.

I'll give it a try and see what happens. My cam sits on a mineral sit and I am concerned about the activity being too high and the SD card filling up or the batteries getting a work out!

What model camera are you going to try video mode?

To be honest I will have to look - it's a stealth cam is all I recall off the top of my head. It's a $100 cheap one - I just don't recall the exact model. I'll get a bigger SD card and a new set of batteries for it as well.

Its all been said. I agree high traffic areas can end up with alot of video to review, but you do catch some really cool things at times.

For me, it's all about purpose. I'll take continuous shot bursts for IDing bucks every time. In some ways it's better than video for me, I can zoom in on clearer images and it's a ton faster than reviewing vid clips.

From a professional standpoint, the video is awesome for capturing bucks in HD doing things that a cameraman could spend a lifetime of trying to get and never succeed. They're the backbone of support footage for Grow `em Big, and I'll be using a bunch of those vid clips in Hunt `em Big, which will be the same format, only covering hunting and running just over hunting season.

To me, still pics are for managing/hunting, video is for entertainment/glimpses of things you may never see from stand.

Hopefully not a Stealth G42NG they are know for not compressing video as small as some other cameras...just make sure you get big enough SD card

Here is a discussion on file size of this camera

I have one of these cameras, but dont use video on it

One of my redneck buddies put it to me this way, "Do you want to look at pictures of pornstars or videos?"

Ever since I've been using video on my moultrie's. Probably won't ever go back to pictures.

Well I went out today and switched my one cam to video (switched to a bigger SD card) and replaced the mineral block. In the process caught a unexpected photo of my partner in crime! And no - he isn't Amish!!!!

Went out and bought another cheap trail cam for my other mineral site. Set it to video as well. I am interested to to see the videos and then I will see which I prefer.

Well I switched my cams to video a couple of weeks ago and just couldn't wait anymore to see the results.

Well one of them the setting is controlled by a rotary 3 position switch - I screwed up and didn't get it positioned properly so I got zip, zero, nada from that one. The other is set a bit too high, but I will fix that.

How do I post a .avi format video?????
