How many different bucks do you think are using that lick, and how many dpsm do you think you have using the area (if you can give a reasonable estimate)?
I would love to have some pics like that of bachelor groups.
Thanks Brooks.
It's only been recently that I've been able to tell how many different bucks I was getting pictures of because so many of the deer had such similar racks. My son and I looked at pictures the other night and we were able to positively ID eleven different bucks that are using the lick and the plot nearby it. I think seven is all that I've had together at one time. The two oldest bucks haven't given a daylight picture yet this year, but I only checked two camera when I got these pics, so they could have shown on others by now. I plan on checking those cams on Saturday.
I don't have a great feel for DPSM here. I can tell you that on my 100 acres, I think right now there are probably 20 total deer counting does and fawns. That is a lot for this time of year compared to historical numbers. Usually I may have half that many at this time of year and build to 20+ by leaf drop.
I think my plots are the primary reason I'm concentrating these deer this year. I have red clover, white clover, chicory and alfalfa all mixed together. The red clover seems to be the main draw. My cover (except for 30 acres of fairly thick woods) isn't that great yet. The native grasses are just beginning to come back from where I mowed them early this year. But I guess with me limiting my movement to only my camera locations (and only in the middle of the day) they aren't feeling much pressure and are taking up residence closer to the food earlier than I would expect. We did some coyote cleaning earlier this year and maybe that helped too.
What lots of folks don't realize is that my farm is just in the infancy of becoming a hunting place and I'm still learning it. Five years ago I had 60 acres of fescue instead of 60 acres of native grasses, and we were running cattle. My woods were like a park. I was basically deer barren and didn't even hunt here. The only thing I did prior to that was a 12 acre tree planting which was fenced off from the cows, but it had to grow and was zero impact until just the last couple of years. Now it provides great cover and I'm dropping lots of chestnuts and fruit this year. The first year I seriously hunted here was 2012.
Sorry I don't have a better answer on the DPSM. I can tell you we have no where near the population of the states south of us like Alabama, etc.... And, I know that we are no where near carrying capacity. I just don't shoot does at all. Not saying I wouldn't if the situation were different, but enough other people around are shooting them and I'm not going to.
It does feel good to see things looking up so much. I appreciate the encouragement from everyone here. This isn't ever going to be Kansas, but it won't have to be to satisfy my goals.:)
