Where are you located? Some farmers in northern areas will plant alfalfa and clover in the spring with oats as a nurse crop. We have done this on our farm which is near Duluth MN and it worked well.
I have done both spring and fall and fall is the easiest, plant around Sept. 1st and plant it with some rye, both will come up next spring and you can clip the rye off or just leave it.
Sorry I reread this, I have never started alfalfa in the fall just clover.
