Morels 2023

Found my first morels of the season yesterday, in between storm fronts coming through. 3 decent blacks. Hope it's the beginning of a good season for them here... last few years, they've been sparse... or I've not gotten out into the woods at the right time.

What state? Where do you look for them?

Christian Co. KY - southern west-central part of the state... 70 mi or so NW of Nashville TN. We'd been out of state for the past week... first chance to get out and hunt 'em.
Have several spots in the woods here on this farm where I typically find them almost every year.

I’ve had no luck so far but that’s about par for the course when I’m mushroom hunting. Would love to get enough for a mess this year been several years since I’ve found any amount of them.

I’m one county over from you and I’ve never seen one. They must be in the corner of my property with all the arrowheads I’ve never found either.

I got into about 40 behind the house all in one spot about 5-6 years ago that’s the last time I found enough to really enjoy a good mess. I’m lucky to stumble across something like that every 10-15 years it seems like so I’m not due for a few more years.

First time morel hunter this year. How does the morel timing compare to apple bloom time?

Do they come out before apples are blooming? After apples have bloomed? During?

Are they out before last frost date? After?

We just had a couple cool days of rain, now around 60 degrees today and 70's this weekend. So weather seems about right.

If you google Morel map 2023, you will see a map of the US that shows where mushrooms have been found recently. Once you see some in your area, start looking at south facing hillsides with warmer soil temperatures and then you can continue to find them for a couple weeks in cooler soil temp areas. In SE MN, mid-May tends to be prime time, but it varies by year depending on weather and soil temps.
