It wil come down to personal preference. I have TC's, Knights and CVA inlines, all are good shooters, with the correct load. Break actions with quick release breech plugs are the simplest when it comes to cleaning. Find one that fits you. Shoot a friends if you can. I've converted all my inlines...

You could wait until fall and spray RU. The then TnM rye and clover. the alfalfa will withstand the RU.

Can you mow between the rows to keep most of the grass at bay? Come September once the trees are dormant over spray with a litre/acre of Roundup, it want hurt the trees. Ive done this with Pines, Spruce and White cedar.

I'd do the same go light, plant again parallel with this last run, but between them and again perpendicular.
