A little disappointed with MDC tree order this year

Disappointed with my MDC tree order this year too, but not because of MDC. I broke my leg at the end of January. When trees were delivered, I crutched out and stared at them in the cool garage wondering how long they would last. Finally, figured out there was no way I could get them in the...

'yotes - can we make a difference?

I believe the best thing to control coyotes is mange. We had lots of coyotes until early 90's when the mange was really bad. It got to where you could go all winter and hardly see a track. The deer herd was at its greatest either due to the lack of coyotes, amount of CRP, not enough hunters or a...

    Safety glasses with chain saw

Stihl Helmet with mesh face shield here. Also wear wrap around safety glasses with built in bifocals. Love cutting when it's cold as I mostly cut hedge and locust. Carhartt's and chaps. Sharpen saw after each tank full - makes me take a break.

    Honeylocust- do or dont

I have a love hate relationship for locusts. The deer and squirrels hit the pods very hard. But, once established in an area, they require annual maintenance to keep them in check. Pretty sure the cattle and deer go straight from eating pods to my waterways to make a deposit. There are no...

Time Spent Afield...Today vs. "The Old Days"

Natty, This is a Great Thread! 56 year old Kansan here. As a youngster, bird season (pheasant and quail) was the biggest. Every year on opening day, each small town had breakfast and/or lunch for the hunters as a money maker. The motels were booked a year in advance for the that weekend and...

Basal Spraying Locust Trees...kill 'em all

I generally only basal spray the 4" and under stuff or hack and squirt larger during February - April as that is when I have time. It seems to work for me.

Not why we do it, but...

I have used the tree planter before. They work pretty well and are very efficient, especially for putting in shelter belts or planting in an open space. However, the places I want to plant now are in areas that have to be hand planted...no room for tractor and planter.

Congratulations on your award. Interestingly, one thing I was asked was “do you get teased often for planting trees when everyone else is dozing them out?” The answer would be yes. I have different goals.

Not why we do it, but...

Will be planting 300 bare root eastern red cedar as visual screens around a couple bedding areas. I usually prune the roots so they don’t J-root and plant them with a dibble bar. Also like to dip the roots in root slurry.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I had to miss the presentation at the local soil conservation banquet due to a misshap ...broken leg. Worst part is, I will still be in a cast when the trees I ordered last fall show up.

    Trailers?

I was leaning toward a dove tail trailer. But, when I talked to the trailer dealer, he said he never had someone buy a tilt bed and come back wishing they had bought a dove tail. So I bought a tilt.
