THE FARM

Boone

5 year old buck +
Since there is a wealth of knowledge on this site I thought I would start a thread about our farm. We have 160 acres that has been in the family for 60 yrs. It's in west central WI, 70 tillable, 70 woods, 20 acres pasture. We have 5 acres of plots and 15 old apple trees and 7 new Apple trees. I've been planting 2-3 new trees a yr. I've also planted about 300 Norways in the last few yrs. I will give an update as the food plotting begins.

Sounds like a nice place. Land threads are enjoyable and informative to read through. I've considered starting one, but my place is a little on the bland side.

Looking forward to Norway updates. I'd like to plant many acres of them, but my learning curve has been steep in the 1st year!

Very nice!

Norway's are my favorites, one of the most forgiving and hardiest of the conifers...even a dumbass like me has good luck with them.

Some of our Norways are 3 years old. I haven't seen any growth but am hopeful that they take off. I actually started to cage some for added insurance since the deer have stripped all the branches off some of them this past winter. We are adding areas of EW for temporary cover until the trees mature.

No it was from last fall. The tubes are huge, a lot of food there in maybe a 1/4 acre.

This was the first year my brassica's got enough rain to do anything. Deer are in them everyday now.
It's always so dry by the end of summer that actually getting them going has been tough. I didn't get near the growth you did but I'm glad for what did grow.

Boone, that is a nice buck! Great bowkill.

What county are you in Boone? I hunt SW WI and Houston Co MN.

Cool. I occasionally hunt La Crosse county as well. Some good deer running around the area. Good luck with the place... I'll follow along for sure.

So I went to check my trees I planted and found something pood next to my tree. What do you guys think it was from?

This is a chestnut crab b118. The trunk has turned somewhat orange and the leaves have holes in them. Is that all insect damage? Should I spray it with sevin?

I don't know what the orange-ish trunk is about, but as young as your Chestnut crab is, Sevin wouldn't hurt for insect control. It's not like it's bearing apples and Sevin will be a problem with thinning them. Holes in leaves mean something's eating them.

Maybe one of the experienced apple growers will chime in on the orange-ish trunk. I wish I could help with that.
