2018 Scion exchange!

Mortenson - No problem. My camp has a batch of regular apples too, but the crabs just seem to chug along without a big fuss to make them grow & produce. The 3 I mentioned have grown well for us at camp. I haven't had a Violi's fruit yet - maybe this summer - but the All-Winter-Hangover and the Winter Wildlife crabs have fruited and they are doing REALLY well. They are proprietary varieties that St. Lawrence Nursery has introduced. I've never seen them anywhere else. SLN has Violi's and AWH ready for spring 2018. I get their catalog in the mail, but it's also online. They have no Winter Wildlife for this spring, but Connor Hardiman - the owner of SLN - told me he'll have them for spring 2019.

The AWH puts on 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" dia. red-blushed apples that drop for us starting in October & drop slowly for another month or 2. Tasty in October, if you want to try them. The WW crab puts on 1" dia. red apples that still had some hanging in mid-December after our regular deer seasons were over. Happy with both of them !! We have several of both.

I don't need anything in return. As H20fowler said above - I'm just paying it forward. If these scion exchanges help other guys with some good trees - it's all good.

For those of you who are new to collecting and sending scions to members on the exchange, please remember a little dab of wax or tree cote on the cut ends of your scions is really valuable insurance to insure against them drying out. If they dry out before they get to another member it does not matter if he is a beginner or master grafter, they ain't going to take and that member is going to lose a lot of time.

On another note, if anyone is looking for a variety and has not found it send me a PM. I have about 100 and will send what I have to anyone, but don't have time to follow the forum real closely I am starting to get super busy with work again.

I've always taken zip-lock bags and paper towels with me as I cut scion. I wet the paper towel pieces and wring them out so they are just damp. I put those in with the scion and seal the bags until I get home. I do the same thing with the scion I send out in the mail. I guess they all made it safely - no one has told me they arrived dried out. That method is what I read on here at some point from guys that had sent scion in the mail. Some of the guys I sent scion to later told me how they grew after grafting.

Not disagreeing with you WTNUT about waxing / tree coating. I guess I could do BOTH - damp paper towels and wax ?? I've only sent scion a few times .......... what's the best advice ??

That is what I do....candle wax on the cut ends....wrap in damp paper towel....place in zip lock bag....place in ice chest and then in the crisper drawer in the fridge.

Here's what I have to give:
Calloway crab
Terry Winter apple
Old Fashioned Limbertwig apple
Bramley's Seedling apple
Yate's apple
Arkansas Black apple
Several different type of pears
Deer Magnet persimmon

Still working on what I might need...not sure I have enough rootstock to do everything. Let me know if you see something you'd like from list.

Thanks chickenlittle for the tutorial on the GRIN website. Hopefully it worked!

My GRIN order was made back in August and the order status say "Reviewing" for each scion type ordered.

I just ordered some beeswax and paraffin and am going to dip both ends of my scion in a 50-50 blend before storage. I received some scion from a forum buddy in the northeast and they were in great shape.

The postal service has been extremely slow from some other areas of the country and scion seemed dried out. Our Minnesota weather during transit and after grafting led to poor success

Frost after top working hurt my success. I also wonder how it can take so long for the postal service to get a package through.

Here is what I'll offer up. I would most like disease resistant pears, especially later dropping (Ayers, Kieffer, Douglas, Moonglow, Maxine, Seckel, Ms. Laneene, Gate, Gallaway, Becton). For apples, just a few crabs on my list, Hewes Virginia crab, SLN's Violi's, AWH, or some of the Northern Whitetail crabs. I don't have any apple rootstock on order but I could fix that if needed. I'm already thinking about ordering some apple budwood from the USDA GRIN for August T-budding.

Scion I could share:

Columnar Apples See my Project W thread if interested

I am going to attempt my first batch of grafts this year. Was hoping someone would be able to send me any kind of disease resistant apple scions. Not picky at all, was going to pick up 20 118 rootstocks to play around with. First time grafting so not expecting much success, can pay postage.

I have some Liberty scion that would work as well as a few others worth trying. Send me a message and I'll let you know what else I have that might be of interest to you.

Don’t set your expectations too low. Bench grafting is relatively easy. Study the you tube videos. I did 20 last year for the first time and 16 took. I have a few different types of apples I could send you some wood from. Send me a PM and let me know what you are most interested in.

If you are in PA, where at? There are a few of us that might be close to you. If the Bloomsburg area were close enough, you could meet me some weekend in the next couple months, look my orchard setup over, and collect the scionwood directly from my trees.

Thanks guys, located in SE PA and the trees would eventually make their way up to my camp in Bradford county. I have watched numerous Youtube videos on grafting and have some raised beds at home that I can baby them in for the first year.

I'll be doing some grafting for trees to be planted around a new home that we're currently building.

For apples for the family, I'm looking for Galarina

For (hopefully) bullet-proof small crabs for both visual impact and for the birds, I'm looking for Adams, Robinson, Prairifire, and Centurion
