Any one else get a popup window on computer saying that you should reserve your Windows 10 update? Thoughts on up grade? I am happy with my Windows 7 version but how long will Microsoft support it?

Windows 7 mainstream support ended already, back in January of this year. Windows 7 extended support ends in January of 2020. So you would be good to go for 5 years at least. I haven't dinked around with Windows 10 enough to make a solid judgment yet, but supposedly it is much more like Windows 7 than Windows 8 ever was. I have heard the Windows 10 upgrade is going to be free for 1 year to users upgrading from Windows 7 and higher to the new Windows 10 platform, after that you will likely be charged to get the upgraded software, just like you always have. There have been rumors that Microsoft wants to make Windows into a "yearly subscription" type service, where you pay a maintenance and use fee every year, but I don't know how serious they are about that or how well it will go over with consumers. They have been somewhat forced into a corner by the fact that the Apple OS and Google Android operating systems are freely updated and maintained for the life of the product and the fact that Apple or Google don't charge exorbitant prices for someone to get their software, it is considered a part of the hardware when they sell you a phone, computer, or tablet and it is considered a "customer service" to upgrade and maintain that software to keep their hardware working properly.

^ I spent 30+ years learning the Microsoft windows products for my business and dealing with their constant bugs, viruses, and problems. Lots of different windows computers came and went. Windows 8 put me over the edge......and I switched to the Apple products (iPhone, IPad, IMac). Life is good.....with Apple. :)

I just wish I could grab an Apple laptop for the price of a Windows based one....... Thats the only reason I keep getting Windows machines.

I am on my phone a lot, but it does not give the experience similar to using a keyboard and having a screen you can actually see without squinting.....

I HATE typing messages on my phone. HATE it.

I have a keyboard cover for my IPAD Air. IT IS THE REAL DEAL FOR TRAVELING.....or just daily use. Very versatile and easy to take along....anywhere / everywhere. Not sure how much I NEED a laptop anymore.....but I still prefer it to the IPAD. I usually wear my glasses to see the IPAD....and they are REQUIRED for my phone.

Ipad is fine..... I should have clarified I was commenting in regards to the phone part of the conversation.

Think how far they've come in 5 years. In 5 more you'll be doing more on that phone and iPad. Apples working on devices to control your home appliances and other things right from your phone or IOS device.

I have some "smart home" features. I can open / close my drapes from our IPad.....and watch weather conditions......as well as turn on and off AV stuff.....security....control furnace....and more. I backed away from controlling our lighting....but may add that at some point. The costs (when constructing new) are not too bad compared to hard wired stuff.

It's neat to check on the house from our cameras when we are out of town.....and the security stuff give some peace of mine.

Still.....electronic have a way of "getting to me" at times.

I'm guessing most of us home users will not be using the notebooks and desktops in 4-5 years. Everybody is using the smartphones and iPads. Watch when you're at the doctors office or standing in a checkout line. People whip out their smartphones. These same people 10 years ago didn't know how to use a mouse. Times are changing.

Television will be much different by then too.
This home/business user will never switch to anything smaller than a 17" laptop. I literally HATE doing anything on my phone or even a tablet. Look at the recent trend, the tiny gizmos were all the rage and now look at the cell phones, the screens just keep getting bigger and bigger, might as well use a tablet to make phone calls on. My daughter has the Samsung Mega smartphone and they offer tablets that are only 3" wider and 2" taller than her phone. You will never replace PC's for true power users. Maybe for the everyday average web browsing, Angry Bird playing, online shopping user, but never for someone who is a true audiophile or PC gamer, no matter how powerful those smaller devices become, you can never compete with the truly powerful hardware(like dedicated video and audio cards) they can equip a full sized tower with.

Just to add a little. The Windows 10 (and upgrade) doesn't actually launch until the end of July. So you are either getting the download which has started circulating so you will be ready for the launch or you were offered the trial/beta version. Probably it was the former. The upgrade is supposed to be free for the first year so you have plenty of time to decide. I would recommend upgrading eventually.

It is the full upgrade for Windows 10. What they are calling it is reserving Windows 10. It downloads to your computer but will not install until the release date. I think I will wait until I get some feed back from people once it is released.

I am in the process of wiping the hard drives and installing the Windows 10 Technical Preview(i.e. beta software) on to all of my computers that are currently set up to only run something older than Windows 7. I have 2 older XP Dell towers(with really good hardware just an old OS), an XP Dell Laptop(to use as a spare), and a high end HP Multimedia laptop running Vista(that I want to set up for the wife so I can get my laptop back finally). Rumor has it that any "beta testers" that have the Tech Preview software installed will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free as well, regardless of the previous version that was installed on those machines, even if it is older than Windows 7.;)
