Where are you on spring preparation?

Got my pruning finished. Tried to add some composted horse manure too all my trees, but only the top inch of the pile has thawed. Still getting below freezing every night, with some teens in the 10 day forecast. Anxious to get started but don't want the trees to break dormancy too early.

I thought about doing the same. I have added some in the past when I planted, but never to the surface on trees that have been in the ground. You, or anyone else, have any real objective idea as to how much benefit there is to it? No soil scientist here, but know it takes a lot of manure to equal a little fertilizer.

It's all I've used on mine as I'm too cheap to buy fertilizer when I've got an endless supply of the free stuff. So I can't really tell you if it works as well or better, or even worse. What I can tell you is I have 35'x35' garden that I covered with about 3" of the manure my first fall here. I get veggies coming out of my ears now, when it was mostly sand to start with. My sweet corn grew two full ears on every stalk last year. This is year #3 for my first apple plantings, and I'm happy with their growth so far. They're loaded up with fruit buds this year.

Winter doesnt want to give in. My land is suppose to get 6-10 inches tonight.

I don't have much to do anymore so I'm basically done. I do want to level my plot some but waiting on the box blade for that. Planted 6 pear trees about a month ago that are just starting to bud swell.

The 2-week forecast and the April forecast look cold and wet in the heartland. I need to get some crushed limestone hauled in, but the 6 Ton road postings are in effect.

What is spring? Still have 2' of glacier snow. Hoping today's rain puts a dent in it. I have no plan for when my trees arive. Going to be ugly.

Hey buddy, doesn’t your spring start July 15, summer July 16, and winter July 17 :)

How long will bare root trees keep if they are unopened once they arrive and the box kept in a cool spot. I always try to get mine out in a day or two, but with me traveling now I am concerned they will arrive while I am gone. My wife can move them to the lower garage which is very cool, dark and dry.

Snow on the way and temps dipping into single digits for the next two weeks at night here......I won't be doing a whole lot for awhile! Planting switchgrass, sending out scion and frost seeding today!

We are just south of the line of another dumping of snow... :-(
- finish pruning remaining apple trees ... I have a bunch that need to be tied down and branches spread
- cut another batch of redosier cuttings - trying to hit a 1000
- build the outdoor raised bed for them
- cut 100 or so Hybrid willow cuttings/stakes for a windrow
- graft 100 crabs and apple scions to Antonovka root stock and pot them
- build racks for holding those tree pots
- find/buy unfrozen soil for those tree pots
- pull 200 or so trees and shrubs from the nursery for planting.
- make cages and cages and cages (should have done that long ago - but thanks to the tip on wire remesh Ive got plenty of cage material.)
- purchase seed for clover plots and buckwheat seed - see following
- build an aviary for the bees my wife talked me into getting this spring
- assemble and paint the hives
- do any other bee stuff I forgot or dont know about yet
the list is endless...........................

On the national weather a few mornings ago, they had a place near Chummer - Redfield, N.Y. - listed as having 368" of snow already this winter. More may still come !! ( See post #28 ).

We got an established plot frost-over-seeded with Alice white clover at camp. That should help to thicken the plot.

Wish i could give you a direct answer but truth is I am always a nervous wreck to leave roots exposed for very long. I have a couple huge pots at the house that i put all trees in together then back fill with moist potting soil and keep in the basement of north side of the house till planted. Hope that helps

Yea that would be a good idea. This is from a different supplier and guess what my wife just called and said they were delivered today. I will not be back to plant for over a week. I get a lot of trees from Grandpa’s Orchard. They always come in a bag with lots of moist peat moss around them. I would say they could last a couple weeks easy. I know I have left trees for a week in the past, but not sure how these are packaged!

Jordan that is an amazing spot for your trees I am just a little jealous.

Thanks. This is at my home. Have wanted to Plant an orchard here since before we built the house and finally got around to it. Hope to baby these trees and get them producing early. I planted the apples on M7 and some on b118. If all goes well should have apples in a few years. Just planted Lowe’s pears. Not sure what roots they are... anyone know?

I am behind. I have been traveling for work so I have not been able to do things after work like I tend to do. We also have had about a week straight of rain. So the ground is entirely saturated and the creeks are flooded - which means part of my place is either under water.....or soon will be. My trees are pruned but I want to try some more grafting and I have crab apples to get planted (bought the stuff today). It will get done but some dry weather surewould help.

I always check them the day they arrive, too many times I've found the roots borderline dry.

I just got a shipment of root stock in a 100 count bundle, they were bundled up tight and didn't have any damp material shipped with them. I poured water on them then re-bagged them. Outward appearance was they had damp roots and I really poured a good amount of water across the roots. Normally I cut the bundles open and mix in wet sawdust or paper but didn't this time; So... I cut them open the other day and the center roots barely got any moisture... they were bundled that tight. I was lucky that they were in a very damp, plastic bag in a chilled cooler. Its a lesson I learned along time ago when planting pines...tight bundled roots are tough to get hydrated. I just thought the amount of water I poured on them would have penetrated through all the roots... instead they shed water and didn't get much in the center, ... always cut them open and check the inner stock's roots. always....

No way to be sure, but I have some Lowes Pears that have been in the ground for years. They said semi dwarf, but all are standard easily over 20 feet at this point. I would bet a little money yours will be too. My friend bought some 5 years ago and his are clearly standard as well.

I am back up to about 3 feet of snow after last nights 10 inches. With the 10 day forecast of highs barely above freezing, and lows in the single digits.
