What tree is this

I'm leaning towards black gum. I marked this tree in September while squirrel hunting, and at that time the black walnuts in the area were fairly easy to identify as they were one of the first to drop their distinctive leaves. I've got my eye on them, and will update the thread so we can achieve closure.
