What to do with last year's milo

Oleo

5 year old buck +
I have a couple acres of last fall's milo planting. Is there something I can broadcast into it sometime before green up to suppress weed growth? Food value would be a bonus.

Buckwheat?

I like buckwheat, but it seems like I need to wait until soil temperatures are warm to plant it, and by that time, there's a bunch of weeds that I need to spray. I'd like to find a cycle where I can plant a fall annual (corn, soybeans, milo), then plant something into that over the winter or early spring that carries me into/through the summer, then plant a fall annual again. If I always have something growing, I wouldn't have to spray.

Have a suggestion for that cycle?

Oats, peas, and annual clovers.

How did the Milo work out?

All of these things can be planted now, or before green up anyway?

The Milo was OK. The state wildlife biologist gave me a bag of mixed varieties. I probably got it planted a little late. I didn't see a lot of deer activity around it to be honest.

Not yet. Wait til the soil temperature is about 40. Oats, peas, radish, and lettuce are the earliest seeds that get planted usually, in my garden. You can throw in some lettuce and radish if you want.

There are different kinds of annual clover. I recommended it because it will offer deer food and add nitrogen to the soil. Just pick one or two and plant according to instructions. Crimson clover, for example, can start growing pretty early, and it grows fast. It's probably a good choice for you in this application.
