Just curious, what variety is that?

Yes sir, it is fireblight.

"Wagener is scab resistant, but it is highly susceptible to fireblight (second only to Spitzenburg)."

So, proper way to dispose of this nasty thing is?

As in, can I just cut it at the base and throw it 50 yards away in the woods? Or remove it from the land entirely and burn?

What I have done with my previously fireblight-prone pear trees was to cut out all of the dead stuff aggressively, leaving a healthy branch or two with plans to topwork to something resistant the following spring. I hate wasting an established healthy rootstock. But if you have other susceptible trees nearby, it might need to go.
