It looks like a quince. Quince is sometimes used as a rootstock for pears. It looks like there might have been a pear tree there and it was either cut off or died off somehow and the rootstock sprouted and is yielding fruit.
 
What does quince taste like? I tried it and I would describe it as a lemony apple...

Usually bitter and astringent. But they are very high in pectin, so they are added to apple sauce and preserves.

It was at a public lake/park 2.5hrs from home... no chance of putting a cam up. I'll be there again next Saturday and might not return again.
