What are the chances that this topworking will be successful, considering the large size to the trees?

If it doesn't work, nothing lost - they were ornamental crabs and worthless. Plus, if they die, they should send out some root sprouts that can be grafted.

Has anyone ever been successful topworking trees this big? How long did it take them to close the space?

Stephen Hayes has and it took roughly three years to look like a tree again.

I had real good luck topworking two old trees last year, all of the growth made it through the winter, now its just a matter of choosing which ones to keep and which to remove.
