Well leaking what is this? Found on my new property.

its right next to my creek I think it's a well, but that pipe seems awfully large, but I don't know.Im not sure why one of the previous owner would of put it there either.

Need more info. Is the creek fenced off? Could it have been the pipe to a cattle water troth from the creek?

I’d hook that bad boy Up to an above ground water troth with an over flow back to the creek.

That’s odd - is the water flowing out of that pipe now? I can’t tell from the picture if the water was coming from the pipe or the ground behind it.

If the water is flowing out of the pipe, where is the water coming from? Must be a pump somewhere or using gravity somehow. Or maybe it somehow tapped into a spring?

it's out in the middle of no where by a creek third to half of the way down the creek slope. its leaking into the creek now which is about 10 to 20 feet. I think it's an arestian well and Im guessing they put it there to have free water and they had to put it by the creek to get it below the water table? Unfortunately this is going to cost me money cause I'll need to cap it.

Artesian well or natural spring? Maybe someone had a springhouse there way back when.

Collect a water sample send it in for testing. If it comes back as drinkable I wouldn't cap it either. Maybe build some kind of low cost shelter over it and find a way to divert it to where it can be used.

If it's 1 1/4" pipe, it's more than likely a sand point driven down to a spring

How close is it to a house or cabin? While the water coming out looks clean, and the vertical orientation would be unusual, a back woods southern Illinois property I purchased in 1994 had an open sewer pipe running from the house to a nearby creek (yuck). Always assumed that house was on septic, until we had to figure out how a snake came up the pipes into a toilet!

No houses close by maybe 1000 yards to nearest house. The property at one point had cattle on it. I found a concrete troth. A 100 yards away from it. That housing looks like it's need to be replaced. I'm gonna call and see if I can get it repaired and hook a hose up to a little fountain like this. My main concern was first erosion and it contaminating the water table.

Could tap it with some tubing, run downhill a bit, then have it fill a tub for a watering hole? Set up a small tub with water constantly flowing in and out of it. flowing water won't freeze. Or at least, not as easily. So make a freeze resistant watering hole for the wildlife. Could be quite a draw during a hard freeze.

The local old timers used to take a spring, set up a pipe or dam it into a sheltered table (think of a flat, 3-4" deep water pool in the shade), and set their lunch pails in the shallow cold water to keep their food cold during the summer.

Yep in the days before refrigeration, a springhouse was the closest thing to it. Small little structure built over shallow basin that the water would constantly flow in and out of. You'd stick the milk jugs and similar things in the water to keep them cool. It would also keep the air inside considerably cooler than outside, so other foods would get hung and stored in there.

That 3/4"(?) galvanized(?) pipe with the coupling is the one that confuses me, wondering what that was and if it was coming or going?

That whole thing could be a godsend for irrigation / growing purposes. That's my lament, the place I want to grow things is at the top of the hill and my well is at the bottom.
