weather gamble

DiSc0Rd

5 year old buck +
so if any of you have followed my plot log you know the drought killed all my buckwheat and now it's just sand and cactus. however, the two storms coming from the gulf are slated to bring rain for the first time in almost 4-5 weeks. i have WR and a brassica blend that i plan to put in after labor day but with the rain coming im wondering if i shouldnt get the seed on the ground now and let the rain do its thing and hope we dont have anohter 5 week drought. i have nothing in the plot they can eat now and i really want food for the winter. i know no one can predict the weather but is it worth rolling the dice to start getting some green going?

Roll the dice. If you get snake eyes you will still have time to replant. If you wait, it's still a gamble. Door number 1 or door number 2? Your only 7 to 14 days from your original plan. To God, 7 to 14 days is one tick of the clock.

I'd put in now for sure.

My property is almost 3 hours away and I can't get away until Sunday. You bet your @ss I'd plant right before the rains if I could! Especially if you're broadcasting - makes us all look like geniuses :emoji_slight_smile:

I'm only 40 min away but it the forecast holds as is 3 days of rain is a monsoon compared to the last month.

I'd still plant personally, especially if you're broadcasting. The timing is right as well.

im going to prob broadcast this weekend. they sure arent eating the dirt

I had a real nice brassica plot planted mid-July that is struggling right now. My early august planting of peas and oats and clover barely germinated since we got almost no rain in August. Rough year, but I just stocked up on a bunch of Rye as my backup plan.

For the guys doing the Rye to the Rescue plan, what else can be added to it for some extra groceries for the November into winter period? Still add a few lbs of radishes for small tender plants and a little red clover?

Definitely. Crimson clover grows well into the cooler months and a cheap addition. Oats can add some tonnage as well but will likely winter kill in northern IL.

Yep. Radish, turnip, oats, MRC, peas. Lots of choices.

I’m in central Missouri and I’m planting this Saturday - rye, oats, radishes and clover. you Know how the weather forecasts are in the Midwest - you’re taking a chance ether way. We had plenty of rain through most of the summer but it’s been pretty dry for a couple weeks. Im planting this weekend and hoping the rains from midweek this week out a little moisture in the soil and the rains late this weekend just Add to it. If not, I’ll throw some more stuff down in September.

Right there with you there, this front will pop things up pretty quick.

4 hours of rain, twas a good day

Agreed. It’s not always that it works out but I finished plating as the rain was Starting on Saturday. Three hours of rain yesterday and then A light soaking rain today. Cooler weather on tap too. Our plots should all establish well this year. We just have to remember this when the drought hits us next time.

I'm still pretty pumped that the buckwheat I planted TnM came up. Sure it was eaten to the ground and hit drought but it came up w no help from fert or lime. Now I have rye clover and brassica on the ground and for rain 2 days later. I started this with low expectations and of the rye comes in healthy it will be all I could hope for.
