Warm weather effects

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
Anybody have buds swelling on your fruit trees yet ?? Has the warm weather upped your pruning schedules ?? Scion harvests ??

We have crocus, Iris, and some other bulb emerging. I have seen a few small shrubs in tree tubes showing green emerging out of the bud.

Next to weeks look great, mostly 40-50 every day. They are saying March looks cold. That would be perfect. Get rid of the snow now then have cold to keep everything dormant. I have 3.5' snow pack right now so it will take some warmth to get rid of that.

Thanks for posting Aero !! ^^^^ Very good info.

http://fruitgrowersnews.com/news/worried-february-warmup-fruit-crops/ Here is a good article about warm temps and the potential for damage later. This article gives me some better feelings about this warm weather

Haha, I was reading this thread and was going to post the same link. Then I read your post!

We just had our spring Tree Fruit Growers meeting and the subject came up. Nobody seemed concerned, but someone from Cornell said it bears watching. He said they will be watching when silver tip, green tip, etc. are, and what the evening temps are then.

We are looking at fairly seasonal temps in the NE for the next 15 days. No real wild swings..... :)

George you are the one who got me reading this newsletter haha. Yes the silver and green tip or later is when I get smacked. Last year April 11 I think the temp got to 12 and ruined me. Fingers crossed haha

Very interesting article guys, thanks. I feel a bit more reassured the early warm-up is just a chance to replenish the maple syrup supply a bit earlier than usual.

It upped my pruning that I normally do in mid March, I pruned everything a week and a half ago. Haven't noticed any of my fruit trees budding yet but my neighbors have small leaves on the tops of their silver maples.

Hopefully things will be more seasonal and that won't happen to you again this year, or for any of us for that matter. I think from what we have had for temps so far, has not change the bud phenology to much .... so far. Hard to say, just an anecdotal view, but I don't think we are to far ahead of normal.

I did a lot of fine pruning this week and buds are starting to swell for sure. Keeping my fingers crossed too. I got lucky last year. Got down to 10 at green tip one morning, but didn't lose a ton. I did start some fires that morning though, that could have been the difference.

Hey Paul, not sure if I told you, I did buy a little press this winter and am building a cider house/ roadside stand next month! This is the barn.... http://jamaicacottageshop.com/shop/vermont-cottage-b/ A little bigger than this link though. 16' x 30'.

Hey cool on the cider house. Do you need any hard cider from PA grown apples lol. Come on down and try some first if you aren't sure. Looks cool. I will come visit

Party @Maya 's yee haw!

I have a question, I know different trees require different amount of chilling hours, say it is 1500 hours. After that 1500 hours, what temps and conditions are required for it to start waking up? Is it 33 degrees? 45 degrees? How long does it take with the required temp for it to wake up? So if the required temp is 45, and the daily high hits 45 for an hour, will it begin to wake up, and then from then on will it be in danger of frost?
Does the ground need to be wet from spring rains before it wakes up?

I know the frost danger is related to the stage of the buds, but if it 50 for a week, then refreezes for 3 weeks, then thaws again, will that first warm up woke the trees already? I have some 4, 5 year old trees that I am hoping will start producing this year, but the last couple years havent been friendly for the spring late freezes.

I just read an article from Bloomberg News about early warmth and sudden cold snaps. Professor Karl Niklas of Cornell U. said once buds get ready to flower, an extremely cold temperature - even for just 24 hours - could kill flower buds. Report from Syracuse, N.Y. said average monthly temperature for February was 7 degrees above normal.

Mark Longstroth, of MSU, said buds on fruit trees in Michigan have begun to swell, and are about 2 weeks ahead of schedule. He said if temps. stay warm, buds will flower. Once they begin to flower, any temps. below 28 degrees will damage this year's fruit crops, according to Longstroth.

Let's hope we get lucky.

I heard from professor Paul from Bradford Co. U that you guys were going to have a perfect year w/ bumper crops for everyone in Pa.! :)

Another good article. We just had 2.5 degrees this week. Not sure I am at silver tip but I think maybe some of my trees are and they could be toast and I wouldn't have realized why.

Ugh, I noticed today that one of my trees here in Owego are silver tip. And the forecast says 8° friday night! Crap

Maya - Keep the optimism coming !! ( post #16 ) Bumper crops sound good. I, too, hope Professor Paul is correct.

ChickenL. - Sorry to hear of the low forecast temps. Let's hope for some luck.

If he means me as professor Paul I never said that as I am very pessimistic especially with the March we are having and with low temps in the 8 and 9 degree range in the next week. Hard to tell if at silver tip but a lot of my trees look awful fuzzy white at the tip :( a lot are not also so I am hopeful I will have some apples this year. This weeks temps should slow things down as well. Glad I got my 25 roots grafted today so I have some replacements.

Apple and pear are budding out here and it is getting down in the low teens tomorrow night.
