Trees in December?

So I bought some trees and they were just delivered? It isn’t going to get above 32 his weekend. I think it warms up slightly next week, mid to high 30s. Do I try planting them now? Do I put them in pots? Any thoughts.

Are these bare root trees? Are the trees fully dormant and hardened off?

If they are bare root trees, I would try to get them in the ground as soon as you can. I don't like to leave trees in pots over winter if I can help it. With that said, if they are already in containers, you might have better luck with winter survival keeping them in the pots in a protected environment. I would be curious to hear how others feel about that.

Be sure to water the trees after you plant. Make sure that the soil is firm around the roots before watering. The goal with this water is to just make sure the roots don't dry out over winter and that you are removing any air pockets around the roots.

This isn't an ideal time to be planting trees from my experience, but it can work.

Bare root trees. I wasn't expecting them until spring. Not sure why they shipped them now. TY for the info

The trees are fully dormant and hardened off according to the paper that came with them. Can I leave them as they are or what should I do?

I healed mine in a big bag of potting mix outside. We have a warm-up coming next week in Michigan and I will plant a majority of them next week. This is my favorite time of year to plant.

I would do exactly what Marlin is planning on doing. I would just make sure you've got something to protect the trees if they need it.

Same

cooler temps, more reliable moisture, less transplant shock as more time to develop root systems before summer heat
