How many nuts per bur? It looks like 3 but just want to confirm what you see.
Are any nuts developed?
Other pics and info?
My first thought is a dying Chestnut tree but need more info. The slender leaf with a sharp V at the bottom is like that of an American Chestnut, but that isn’t a foolproof way to ID.

Yes it looks like 3 underdeveloped nuts were in this burr. And 90% of leaves had already fallen, so dying chestnut seems right.

Go to the ACF website and they have lots of resources to help ID. You can even send in pics.
PS - Is this near an old homestead or out in the forest away from civilization.

My guess is the reason the nuts are undeveloped is because there isn’t another chestnut nearby to pollinate it. My next step would be using the ACF resources. Good luck.
