Too late for scion?

furharvester

Buck Fawn
When is it too late to collect scion? I went out to cut some last night and winter crabarina and a couple pears had buds starting to open. I went ahead and took some of the lower wood where the buds had not opened yet. I'm guessing if the buds have opened that the success will be less? Thanks for any input

Pears might be too late, but worth a try if you graft them NOW. Open buds means too late.

I would suggest that probably not too late to get scion as long as it does not have open buds but would also add......often those limbs that have not budded out are 2 and 3 year old wood. In my experience it is much easier to get 1 year old wood to take and grow. So it is not too late as long as it it is non budded "1 year old wood".

Where are you located?

I collected some scion last night in SE MN and I'm sure it will be fine for grafting in a month or two. I'll just keep the scion in a ziploc bag in my garage fridge and it will be good to go.
