So I've got around 15 or so different apple trees that were planted this fall that were spring grafted onto b118 rootstock, do you guys protect them from sunscald? All my other larger trees are protected...just wondering

What method for the little whippersnappers.....

1/2 white LATEX paint - 1/2 water is the usual recipe. Some guys add some joint compound ( drywall spackle ) to the mixture. I've read a few guys also put some permethrin in the mix to kill / repel boring insects. Brush it on up to the lowest limbs.

Sandbur has done quite a bit of this sunscald protection.

Here are seedlings with what I use for sunscauld protection for the first year or two. I have even left some weeds on the south side of the trunk for shade on older trees.

This is a bigger tree, but I often cut about a two foot wide piece of window screen and fold it over on the south or SW side to shade the trunk. It works on whips. I couldn’t find a picture of it on a whip.

Interesting use of screen for shade, must shade it enough. Cool
