Thinking of a new orchard

Did you get them at Hayward? Baileys's trees?

Yup, Baileys, that's it. It was a northwestern greening on whatever rootstock Bailey's uses.

Thanks Ben! I am very glad to see you back. Hope you and your family are doing well. Tell them we appreciate your time and the help we have recieved from you and the time they have allowed us to take away form the family.

X-2 Ben !! Good to hear from you again. I hope all is well with you and family. Nice looking trees !!

Here is a photo of my columnar apple shotplot. 2 to 3 foot spacing between trees. I am thinking I'll do some more with non-columnar varieties with G11/G41 on 4ft spacing and also some with dwarf interstem on B118 and MM111. I think the small root system and water is the main worry about the dwarf.

Surely you are not going to keep the fencing that close when these mature?

I am bumping this back up because I am still thinking a lot about a bud-9, G-11 or G-41 orchard. I found a really good spot for it. I need to take the dozen and excavator and clear the place a little. It use to be a pasture, but the morning sun hits it well. The only down side is it is further down in the hill than I prefer. I am also considering another spot on the other end of the farm. The advantage to the first spot is I can sit on the porch and see it. If anyone has any more orchard photos please post them.

The fencing is probably permanent to prevent buck rubs and keep the bottom 6 ft of the tree bearing fruit. There is a crown to the row with the trees planted on top. As apples drop, they will roll down away to where deer can access. The fence is about 8" of the ground.

It seems very narrow. Will you have enough room to work in there?

WTNUT, I don't expect to be doing much work inside the fence. For now I have room to get in to regraft and replace a couple trees. Once I have all the trees in place and growing well, I will not need to be inside. Columnar trees will not need much pruning and I can reach over the fence to do prune with loppers. For a regular dwarf, a slightly larger enclosure might be helpful but it depends on how you are going to prune.
