Tent worms - I think.

I think these are tent worms. These are all in wild black cherry trees. Do I need to address them? These are all in the woods and away from my fruit trees, but I have not seen them in the woods like this before. I figred most folks would have dealt with these in their fruit trees and why I put it here.

Yes tent caterpillars. Break up the nests and spray with Sevin or some other insecticide. They are nasty critters. Well if they are not in your fruit trees you may be ok but continue to monitor your fruit trees or get your spraying program going if past petal fall

Those suckers are thick this year. Black cherry seems to be their favorite tree but I found one nest started on a crabapple yesterday.

What is "petal fall" - I assume you mean once the blossoms fall off the tree, but I just want to be sure. Mine are still showing blossoms - I'm so proud that I may actually get fruit! I will look into this "Seven" you talk of.

To add to what Aero said, get at them first thing in the morning. They will be more apt to all be in the nests. If you do it during the heat of the day they will be out crawling around. I may be a bit sadistic, but I like to burn them w/ a propane torch! :)

Yes once all the petals of the blossom have fallen off as it won't attract bees any longer and we want to protect bees from the insecticides Here is a Sevin product but you probably don't need this much. Find the concentrate in lowes or tractor supply

Sadistic? Kill'em all and let God sort'em out!!!! Wait until the fog lifts and catch'em in their "tents"!!!!!!!

Hey j-bird, we just had a discussion on tent caterpillars. Check out "Advice on tent caterpillars" thread. The shotgun method will be my son and my favorite!

In a pinch bee/wasp killer spray does wonders on tent caterpillar nests. And it can reach way up into out of reach places.

But it's not as fun as the shotgun method!;)

I will check that out - I wasn't 10% certain I had properly ID the problem. Those I found I can reach so I will stick to the chemical treatment. Ammo is expensive!

Bought some "Seven" and plan on applying in the AM. Both the places where I have the worms as well as my fruit trees as the blossoms are now gone. How often will I need to spray my fruit trees? I haven't read the label yet, but will before I get started in the AM. This will be the first time I have messed with spraying my fruit trees as I have not had a need before and this application is simply a precaution at this point.

Thanks for the advice on the chemical choice.

I think one spraying ought to knocke out the tent cats but try to break the nest and spray it good.
