Submarine communication

5 year old buck +

I worked at this place back in the day. I was thinking about it this morning and googled it. This video popped up. Thought it a bit interesting at least.

Doesn't look like your typical 9-5 job that's for sure.

I grew up hunting in that area. In the early days, right after the line was put in, we used to shine (not shoot!!) giant bucks on the access road off GG during the rut. Maybe shot a partridge or 2 (😳) along that road too.

Back then, there was a manned guard shack and we locals always believed the surrounding woods, outside the fence, had listening and video surveillance. I never messed around and got close enough to find out.

FYI, we used to call it the “Sang one” line and hunted the shit out of the giant X antennae / clearcut in the Chequamegon Forest.

Today, the poles are removed and it’s all filled in…almost like it was never there. I believe the RMEF or someone else does some limited mowing for the elk still. But not 100% sure.

Some GIANT bucks were killed in that area back in the day.

I grew up just north of Clam Lake myself and when the opportunity to work at E.L.F presented itself I jumped on it to be able to move back home. I soon grew board of it and went back to work for the railroad but I did enjoy some aspects of it. Very nearly all of us that worked there were former military. I had the background and clearances so I spent plenty of time in the control room the equipment was very reliable so breakdowns where rare and we had redundancy built in. Glad I jumped ship because they mothballed the site a couple years latter. Grouse hunting up there as you discribed was/is quite normal for most locals. I had a Remington pump shotgun barrel shortened to just over 16” for that purpose.

Ahhhh Sanguine!!! I knew it was probably wrong but so many people called it sang one it didn’t matter. Plus I only speak Northwoods soooooo😂

There is still some pretty spectacular off trail boondocks snowmobiling along the line here and there these days. Not that I’d ride there…..😉

Just waiting for retirement myself then I’ll likely spend syrup season and some time each fall back up there likely will never move back full time my southern wife would be in open rebellion over the winters.

Actually I think the current submarine communication system is based off the coast of Cutler, Maine. Pretty impressive sight to see. We were just in the area for a short vacation. To my understanding it is a purely low frequency, narrow band width transmitter only capable of sending code. No verbal communication.
